Malta, New York was indeed originally known as Dunning Street, which was the name of an early settlement or hamlet in the area.

The Town of Malta was formed in 1802 from the Town of Stillwater, located in Saratoga County, New York.

Additional territory was added to Malta from the Town of Saratoga in 1805.

The origin of the name "Malta" is less certain. There are several theories, but one of the most cited local beliefs is:

The name might have derived from a malt brewery located in what is now called Maltaville, a small hamlet in the town.

Maltaville was once informally known as "Malt-ville", supporting the idea that brewing activity influenced the town’s name.

However, there is no definitive primary source confirming that the town's name came directly from a malt brewery. Some historians also suggest the name might have been inspired by the island of Malta, following a common trend in early America of naming towns after classical or foreign places.
