When was the first time you heard: โ ("They gave me two of spades")? Its spread into everyday language came after the arrival of French playing cards in Italy between the 15th and 16th centuries. Not the precious, Arabic-influenced cards made for courts and elites, but simple, affordable cards with easy-to-print designs accessible to everyone.

The two of spades isnโt just the lowest card in a ranking; according to the rhyme โCome Quando Fuori Pioveโ (used to determine the strongest hand through the initials of its four words), spades are considered the weakest suit in the hierarchy of a deck.
โ became a playful way to indicate a flat-out rejection, usually in a romantic context like a date, a courtship, or even a marriage proposal.
