Established in 2013, 𝙎𝙮𝙢𝙗𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙘 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙨 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙮 𝙋𝙫𝙩. 𝙇𝙩𝙙., simply referred to as 𝙎𝙮𝙢𝙗𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙘 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙨 or 𝙎𝙍, is the first record label format company to be registered in the Maldives. While the company focused on hip-hop and rap during the earlier years and still continue to mainly focus on those genres, it has also grown to produce and promote other genres as well. A strong advocate for original music

and promotion of original local talent, Symbolic Records is the most impactful music entity to be established in Maldives in recent times. During the past 8 years, Symbolic Records has tirelessly challenged and overcome diverse obstacles to reach its goal of creating a demand for original music and creating a true music industry in the Maldives. By mid-2021, Symbolic Records has released 6 albums, 3 EPs, 50+ singles, and produced over 30 video songs. The company currently manages 15 artists in total with 12 of them currently active.

The label has also collaborated with several artists on different projects. These include mainstream artists, rappers from other crews, and also different cultural music groups. Symbolic Records has also announced its own merchandise line; 𝑹𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒂𝑲𝒂𝒍𝒉𝒂𝒂, mainly with clothing and accessories. In 8 years, we have managed to create a loyal fanbase of thousands of youth; commonly referred to as the 𝑹𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒂 𝑲𝒂𝒍𝒉𝒖𝒈𝒆 𝑳𝒂𝒔𝒉𝒌𝒂𝒓𝒖.

The Maldives’ most popular rapper talks literature, prison songs and why his music speaks for the marginalised.

Before he became the Maldives’ most recognisable rapper, Pest was a boy from Fuvahmulah reciting Quran in competitions, reading Dhivehi poetry, and listening to Jalu Lava - the prison songs that described hardship and survival in stark detail.

He was barely sixteen when Reethi Kudhin made him famous. Yet that same song became a burden, one he has spent much of his career trying to move beyond.

“I experienced the fringes of society. My songs occupy the space of the most disadvantaged among us. Those are the experiences I bring to the stage.”

From teenage rebellion with the Symbolic crew, to walking away from music for three years, to returning with songs that captured politics, poverty and everyday life, Pest has defined the path of Dhivehi hip-hop itself.

His latest album L2 is polished and ambitious, carrying both the weight of experience and flashes of lyrical brilliance. In Pest’s own words: “If it sounds good, it’s good. I have a general sense of how I want a song to be, and I communicate that to the producers. That’s my contribution, musically.”
