Golden Matonga Elected to Global Investigative Journalism Leadership Committee
By PIJ Newsroom

Golden Matonga, managing partner at the Platform for Investigative Journalism (PIJ), has been elected to the the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists' (ICIJ) Network Committee—becoming the only African journalist on the global leadership body.

Matonga joins a diverse team of investigative journalism leaders from around the world tasked with strengthening ICIJ’s network of more than 280 reporters in over 100 countries. The committee plays a central role in upholding editorial standards, shaping collaborative practices, and driving cross-border investigations that hold power to account.

The newly elected leadership includes Édouard Perrin of Forbidden Stories (France) as chair, and co-chairs Hala Nasreddine of Daraj Media (Lebanon) and Yasuomi Sawa of Waseda University (Japan). Other members represent major investigative outlets from Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

“This appointment reflects both the trust the global journalism community places in Golden’s work and Malawi’s growing footprint in international investigative reporting,” said PIJ founder Gregory Gondwe. “It’s a proud moment not just for PIJ, but for African journalism as a whole.”

Matonga, an award-winning journalist recognised for his investigative work on corruption, governance and organised crime, has led several cross-border projects under the ICIJ banner, including the Pandora Papers and FinCen files

ICIJ Executive Director Gerard Ryle said the committee exemplifies the strength and diversity of its network, which has helped deliver major exposés such as the Pulitzer-winning Panama Papers and the recent Coin Laundry project on crypto and casino-linked crime.

Matonga’s election affirms PIJ’s commitment to investigative journalism that resonates beyond Malawi’s borders—amplifying African stories, voices and scrutiny on a global stage.

Malawi’s Aviation Registry: A Loophole in the Sky

Malawi’s aircraft registry is turning into a safe haven for rogue operators and sanctions evaders. With few planes flying locally, the registry is nonetheless bustling with jets tied to shady deals across the globe.
Weak regulation. Political neglect. Global consequences.
One Malawian registered aircraft even crashed fatally in South Sudan.

Here's what you need to know about our latest groundbreaking investigation into the owners of an abandoned soviet jet at Kamuzu Airport.

The Ghost Plane's Owners: We traced the plane back to Gravia Airlines and key men: Victor Zelenyuk and Yevgeni Zakharov.

A Web of Airlines & Crashes: Our team followed the paper trail, linking these individuals to a series of airlines, including Aerolift, which was involved in multiple fatal crashes across Africa and the Middle East, costing lives and raising serious questions.

Supplying Militants in Somalia: The most chilling discovery? Our investigation confirms that an Aerolift Ilyushin 76 was found by a UN Monitoring Group to have illegally transferred weapons from Eritrea to militants in Somalia in August 2006 – a direct contribution to regional instability and conflict.

Sanctions & Shadowy Networks: Further digging reveals connections to other entities like Rada Airlines, sanctioned by the US Treasury for links to Russia and Belarus, showcasing the depth of this shadowy global network.

NEW:

For nearly 14 years, a colossal Soviet-made Ilyushin-76 (registration 3X CFR) has been a forgotten eyesore at Kamuzu International Airport. But thanks to PIJ's relentless pursuit of the truth, we've dug deep beyond the surface-level notice demanding unpaid parking fees.
Our exclusive investigation connects the dots from a grounded jet to a shocking trail of evidence leading to figures in the international arms trade and shocking plane crashes across the continent that have killed peacekeeping soldiers and others.

NEW: PIJ previously exposed the highly controversial deal by the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) to buy two Bell 412 helicopters that were so old and dilapidated, a technical report condemned them as "unsafe to fly."

Yet, the MDF made an advanced payment of over MWK 867 MILLION (USD 500,000), as recently acquired documents reveal.

Now, the Zambian supplier, AYA Technologies, has escalated the matter to the International Court of Arbitration in Paris, suing the Government of Malawi for over MWK 8 BILLION for alleged breach of the $9.29 million contract.
