Mera’s K950 billion debt to oil importers raises alarm – IMF confirms PSF is empty

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) is facing a massive debt crisis, owing over K950 billion to Petroleum Importers Limited (PIL) and the State-owned National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA).

Research findings by the Institute of Public Opinion and Research (IPOR) indicate that former President Peter Mutharika was leading in voter support before the launch of the campaign period with 43 percent.

This has been revealed in Lilongwe, where the research organisation is disseminating results of its pre-election survey to journalists and representatives from civil society organisations.

The findings place President Lazarus Chakwera and UTM leader Dalitso Kabambe in second and third positions, with 26 percent and 5 percent, respectively.

IPOR, the study, has been conducted in 27 districts excluding Likoma Island, and its primary objective is to gather accurate data on Malawians' perceptions, expectations, and concerns about the electoral process ahead of the campaign period.

President of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Arthur Peter Mutharika has announced that he will submit his presidential nomination papers in Lilongwe this Friday, 25 July 2025.

In a statement, Mutharika expressed his commitment to serving the nation and restoring hope, dignity and purposeful leadership in Malawi.

Mutharika stresses that his decision to run for presidency is not just a political step but a sacred call to serve the nation.

He has indicated the need for experience, vision and resolute action to address the challenges facing the country.

The European Union (EU) has threatened to withdraw support for police training in Malawi following violent attacks on protestors in Lilongwe yesterday.

EU Ambassador to Malawi, Rune Skinnebach, condemned the incident, which occurred in full view of Malawi Police Service (MPS) and Malawi Defence Force (MDF) personnel who did not intervene.

“I was shocked, disappointed and disgusted by yesterday's events,” he told Sapitwa News Agency .

“We have been giving support to police training but that is something we will have to reconsider if the police does not make good use of the training, if they seemingly don't intend to play their role and if their mandate is undermined by instructions from somewhere else,” he said.

Skinnebach added that the EU expects a thorough investigation to identify and hold accountable those behind the attacks.
