A grouping called "Citizens for Credible Elections" has notified the Lilongwe district council of its intention to hold peaceful demonstrations aimed at forcing the resignation of MEC chairperson Justice Anabel Mtalimanja and the MEC's chief elections officer Andrew Mpesi.
The group's coordinator, Sylvester Namiwa, says the protests will take place on Thursday, 26th June 2025. Namiwa believes the duo are too compromised to preside over free, fair and credible elections.
"The duo's partisan conduct, clearly manifested by the MEC's rejection of demands by electoral stakeholders to allow an independent audit of the Election Management System while clinging to the use of Smartmatic-supplied devices, is enough evidence for their removal," said Namiwa.
While confirming receipt of the letter, Lilongwe district council spokesperson Andrew Mkonda has, however, highlighted that the receipt of the letter does not give the grouping a guarantee to go ahead because the district commissioner will soon call for a stakeholders meeting on the same.
The Malawi Electoral Commission has been addressing such concerns through media briefings and special programmes aired on Zodiak and other media outlets.
