MALAWI, KOREA EXPLORE STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP IN HOMELAND SECURITY.
The Government of Malawi and the Republic of Korea have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation following a high-level meeting between Honourable Peter Mukhito Minister of Homeland Security and Secretary General of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Malawi, H.E. Park Jaekyung.

The courtesy call held on 22 May 2026 in Lilongwe also included Korea’s Deputy Head of Mission Dooyoung Lim and focused on deepening cooperation in homeland security, technology and institutional development.

Speaking during the meeting, Hon. Mukhito commended the long-standing friendship between Malawi and Korea describing the relationship as one built on mutual respect, development cooperation and shared aspirations for prosperity.
The Minister further applauded the Republic of Korea for its continued support to Malawi through various development initiatives implemented by agencies such as KOICA in sectors including education, health, agriculture, technology transfer and infrastructure development.

Central to the discussions was Malawi’s ongoing drive to modernize the homeland security sector through digital transformation and innovation.

The two sides explored opportunities for cooperation in smart border management systems, immigration digitization, cyber security, biometric and CCTV infrastructure, surveillance technologies and capacity building for security institutions.

Hon. Mukhito reaffirmed Government’s commitment to improving public service delivery within the immigration sector and assured the Korean delegation that Malawi remains dedicated to protecting foreign nationals and ensuring justice through established legal and judicial processes.

The Minister also emphasized the importance of technical cooperation, knowledge exchange programs and institutional partnerships aimed at enhancing Malawi’s security systems in line with international standards and best practices.

Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito has described the launch of the Better Migration Management Programme as a major step towards strengthening Malawi’s migration systems and protecting vulnerable people from trafficking and migrant smuggling. Speaking during the official launch at the Bingu International Convention Centre, Mukhito said the initiative will help improve legal frameworks, build technical capacity, and enhance institutional systems to respond to migration challenges.

Mukhito noted that Malawi’s geographical position along the Southern migration route exposes the country to risks of human trafficking and migrant smuggling. He warned that while Malawi is known for its peace and openness, such characteristics can sometimes be exploited by criminal networks. He therefore emphasized the need for increased vigilance and stronger systems to ensure the safety and protection of both citizens and migrants.

The Minister further highlighted that the programme comes at a time when cases of trafficking in persons and migrant smuggling are rising. He pointed to ongoing efforts by the government, including the review of the Immigration and Refugee laws, as well as the development of policies such as the National Migration Policy aimed at strengthening protection mechanisms. Mukhito also commended international partners for their continued support in addressing migration-related challenges.

He concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to combating human trafficking and improving migration governance in line with Malawi’s development goals. Mukhito called for continued collaboration among stakeholders, stressing that addressing migration challenges requires collective action at both national and international levels.

Professionalism Over Politics: The Return of Institutional Integrity?

The recent reinstatement of Henry Mathanga as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi is a landmark moment for our financial sector. After years of legal battles and being caught in the "clearing the rubble" crossfire, the courts have cleared him of all charges.

Mathanga is a career banker who rose through the ranks at RBM through merit, not political patronage. His return, alongside similar resolutions for professionals at MACRA and the To***co Commission, highlights a dangerous trend: the targeting of hard working experts based on home of origin, religion, or perceived political leanings.

Our advice to the administration: Governance must be driven by competence, not emotion or political vendettas. When we sideline our best professionals, the whole nation pays the price.

Let’s protect our institutions from political manipulation.

END NOTE: Henry Mathanga has not been re appointed BUT rather reinstated to his position which he lost 5 years ago.
