The National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM) has urged youths to leverage their innovative ideas to create jobs, generate wealth, and assist the government in achieving its development agendas.

NYCOM Chief Executive Director Rex Chapota made these sentiments during capacity-building training sessions for young innovators held in Mponela, Dowa District.

Chapota emphasized that the council aims to instill a sense of purpose and responsibility in young beneficiaries of the upcoming innovation grants.

He also disclosed that government has invested K2 billion into the National Youth Fund to support youth-led enterprises across the country, with recipients expected to engage in key sectors such as Agriculture, Tourism, Mining, and Manufacturing (ATM&M).

One of the beneficiaries, Elizabeth Teleka, Managing Director of Ezel Agro Processors, expressed her gratitude for being selected, describing it as a significant milestone for her business.

The Embassy of Japan has reaffirmed its commitment to improve education standards in Malawi.

The embassy recently signed a grant contract in February amounting to $48,029 (approximately 82 million) with Ngwenya Primary School in Lilongwe for the construction of some structures at the school including a fence and classrooms.

Speaking today at the handover ceremony, Japanese ambassador to Malawi, Yoichi Oya said primary education is a priority of human capital development.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nancy Tembo, expressed gratitude for the support, saying Japan assists the country in projects that are transformative.

Ngwenya Primary School Deputy Headteacher, Ethel Kambalame, said the project will improve security at the school.

The school now has a perimeter fence keeping 6000 students, four toilet blocks, a gate and a guard house.

Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara has commended the local tea industry for adopting International Labour Organisation Convention 190 on Violence and Harassment in the World of Work.

The convention is the first international treaty to recognise the right of everyone to a world of work free from violence and harassment, including gender-based violence.

Speaking at the Tea Association of Malawi Limited (Taml) Partnersโ€™ Annual Engagement Conference in Salima earlier today, Gotani Hara also praised the tea sector for being the first industry in the country to adopt a Sexual Harassment, Discrimination and Gender Equality Policy in 2017.

โ€œThese steps reflect the industryโ€™s commitment to protecting workersโ€™ rights, preventing child labour and creating a safe and inclusive working environment,โ€ Gotani Hara said.

On financial inclusion initiatives the sector is undertaking, Gotani Hara said such efforts will bring dignity and ensure timely payments to workers.

Over 3,900 workers are now receiving their wages electronically as part of efforts to enhance financial inclusion in the tea sector, according to Taml Chairperson Sangwani Hara.

Hara told delegates to the conference that the sector has a target of reaching out to the over 60,000 people it employs with digital financial services by 2026.
