LOCAL FILMMAKERS FED-UP WITH MULTICHOICE TRAININGS
A number of local filmmakers have in solidarity supported one of the Malawi's celebrated filmmakers, Khama Mbaula, who has stood tall and described the MultiChoice Talent Factory Southern Africa Region' yet to commence initiative of 'Screenwriters-Masterclass' as useless.
In his sentiments, Mbaula has argued that it is nonsense for Multichoice to continue hosting workshops for Malawian filmmakers as it is almost impossible for content from Malawi to be taken as 'content' before Zambezi Magic in particular.
"Don't come here and say anything about that stupid portal, the bottom line is content from Malawi is never acquired for other reasons beyond quality" he argued.
According to him, Multichoice has done too many workshops and filmmakers have learned enough. As such, they must now start financing and supporting local productions.
The Lilongwe based filmmaker also said that it is hilariously impossible that there cannot be even a single person from Malawi who knows how to make proper movies and TV shows. And that even though Multichoice trains filmmakers, the same Multichoice doesn't even have a chance to acquire Malawians' work afterwards, yet Zambias enjoy all the fortunes and glory.
"Not even their own trained filmmakers have a chance, yet every idea a Zambian has, gets a pass!" he vehemently said.
To concur with Mbaula, the Blantyre based multiple award filmmaker, Shemu Joyah, appreciated Mbaula for speaking on behalf of all the Malawian filmmakers. According to Joyah, Multichoice holds trainings just to be seen to have been doing something for the region and interested in putting serious money in malawi, but what they offer for already finished films is nothing but ridiculous.
Conversely, another filmmaker among others, Eric Chan, has also commended the 'Afritrix Pictures' CEO for his brave words by saying that he is always speechless and shocked with what Multichoice does when it comes to this.
"I don't have any kind words for these people, they hate Malawian stories and Storytellers" he said.
However, Mbaula said that this is a great initiative for the sake of knowledge only.
The submission deadline for the Multichoice Talent Factory Southern Africa Region 'Screenwriters-Masterclass' is today, July 19th, 2024. The training will be conducted online on Monday, 22 July from 6pm.
