A survey conducted by Human Resource Management expert Bright Limani has revealed that labour turnover is on the rise in the country's organisations and companies.

He said about 70 of 110 respondents, representing 64 percent, stated revealed that labor turnover is high in their organizations.

"This is quiet disheartening as companies and organizations continue to lose great talent. This can be avoided if they design and implement effective labour retention strategies", the lead consultant for Crystal Management Consult said.

Limani said poor leadership, low wages and toxic work relations have been identified as the top-three causes of the malaise.

He cited lack of career development opportunities, toxic work environment and poor work conditions as other main causes.

Limani has since recommended to people managers and businesses captains multiple solutions including improving salaries and wages, providing quality participative leadership, creating good work environment and providing career development opportunities for staff.

Youth Empowerment for Community Transformation (Yefcot) in Nkhata Bay says it is overwhelmed by the growing number of young people accessing sexual reproductive health services at its centre.

According to the organisation’s director Ganizani Tembo, 701 youths have accessed the services from January to date, surpassing last year’s total of 565.

“The data shows that more young people now know where and how to access these services, thanks to our awareness campaigns,” said Tembo.

Nkhata Bay District Youth Network chairperson Ephraim Nyirenda hailed the organisation for bringing services closer to the youth, saying it’s a big step in promoting sexual reproductive health rights. He urged more young people to utilise youth-friendly health centres to safeguard their future.

The Mchinji First Grade Magistrate's court has convicted and sentenced two brothers, Mabvuto Mbewe, aged 42, and Pemphero Mbewe, aged 28, to 14 years' imprisonment with hard labour for vandalising Escom property in Mchinji.

Through the state prosecutor, Sub Inspector Martin Kuliyani, police arrested the two after they vandalised three electricity poles and stole wire cables valued at K1.3 million on May 27, 2025.

Kuliyani also added that the two were found in possession of the stolen wire cables, which were cut into pieces and offered for sale at Mgubo market, in the area of T/A Nyoka in the district.

Appearing before the court, the two pleaded guilty to the charge of malicious damage but prayed for leniency, citing family obligations.

The state, however, through First Grade Magistrate Fred Juma Chilowetsa, slapped them with 14 years each to deter other "would-be" offenders, saying the malpractice is escalating.

The two convicts hail from Note Village, Traditional Authority Kazyozyo in Mchinji.

Sauti & Company Law Consultants say they have deeply fallen in love with chess development among children and have pledged regular sponsorship of Southern Region Chess League’s (SRCL) Kids Championship.

The law firm’s representative Kings Kondowe made the commitment after being impressed by the organization of the children’s competition at Scenic Events Garden near Ngumbe in Blantyre.

“This was the first time we sponsored a kids' chess tournament and have been impressed with how the event was organized and how the
children handled themselves throughout,” he said.

“We have seen for ourselves that chess teaches discipline and promotes strategic thinking among individuals. We would like to associate ourselves with kids’ chess for a long time.”

The two-day tournament, which attracted over 80 contestants, ended in glory for Emmanuel Mkundikana in the under-nine boys category and Oriheya Kambalame in the girls’ section.

The under-13 boys division had Alipo Namangale as the victor while Mercy Malikita did it in the girls division. The under-16 level
produced Praise Kakota and Rachel Jailosi as respective boys’ and girls’ champions.

Jailosi, who is the country’s youngest Women Candidate Master at 14, said regular tournaments are important as they will help in perfecting her moves.

While expressing gratitude to Sauti & Company Law Consultants for trusting in the game, SRCL general secretary Wasoka Chirwa also appreciated support from Nyamphande Estate, Dadaz Chess Academy, Scenic Events Garden and Mdauko Ngulube for additional support.
