As part of efforts to raise awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, 888 Bets Malawi has donated a cheque worth K2.5 million to the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) Oncology department, which is currently facing major shortages of medication and laboratory supplies.
Speaking on behalf of 888 Bets, Grace Mandevu said the donation aims to ease some of the challenges limiting the department’s ability to serve patients effectively.
She said through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, 888 Bets remains committed to supporting QECH and other health institutions, adding that their goal is to create lasting partnerships that make a real difference in communities.
Mandevu also encouraged Malawians to take part in breast cancer awareness and early screening, saying everyone has a role to play in the fight against cancer.
Receiving the donation, Dr. Noel Chiphangwi Head of Oncology Department described the gesture as timely, noting that it will help fund critical diagnostic services such as Histopathology and tumour marker testing, which are currently unavailable at the hospital. He thanked 888 Bets for their continued support, emphasizing that the contribution will “literally change lives” by giving desperate patients access to diagnosis and treatment they could not otherwise afford.
Dr. Chiphangwi also highlighted several challenges the cancer unit continues to face, including a rapidly growing patient population that is straining limited resources such as diagnostic capacity, radiotherapy access, bed space, transportation to the National Cancer Centre, and accommodation for patients undergoing treatment.
Present during the cheque handover ceremony were 888 Bets Country Manager Clement Kwesi Phiri, Sipho Nyasulu, Chifundo Mtingala, and Mighty Wanderers representative Grayson Chapita.
