MIA CLEARS AIR ON TRANSFORMER, AMBULANCE ALLEGATIONS
Former Chikwawa Nkombezi legislator, Abida Mia, has dismissed as “baseless and politically motivated” social media claims that she removed a community transformer and seized ambulances after losing the September 16 elections.
Both the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) and local leaders have confirmed that the allegations are false.
Speaking with Mia stated that the transformer replacement was strictly an ESCOM matter. “I never went there. I respect democracy and the people’s choice during the elections,” she said.
She also clarified that she never took ambulances from Chipwaila Health Centre or Thelele. Instead, she only facilitated the repair of a motorcycle ambulance to assist patients reaching Mgabu Health Centre, while another vehicle was formally allocated to Chikwawa District Hospital.
Village Head Chipwaila 2 backed her position, saying he personally asked for her intervention when the transformer failed. “She only contacted ESCOM, who later replaced the borrowed transformer,” he confirmed.
ESCOM spokesperson Pilirani Phiri explained that the transformer swap was a technical decision. A faulty 1MVA unit at Ngabu Cotton Ginnery was replaced with one from Mphango, while a 500KVA unit was installed at Mphango, which only required domestic supply.
“This arrangement ensured both Ngabu and Mphango continued to have electricity,” Phiri said.
Amid the rumours, Mia has called on her supporters to remain calm, stressing that her priority remains the welfare of the people of Chikwawa despite the spread of false accusations.
