A fisherman from Mwendomthengo village in the area of Senior Chief Tengani in Nsanje is feared dead after gone missing in the waters of Shire river.

Tobias Kawirawira a resident of the area identified the fisherman as Alfred Lino who reportedly went missing on Saturday afternoon while on fishing errands.

According to Kawirawira, Linu on the fateful noon left home for Shire river but did not return home till late hours a development which prompted his wife to report the issue to neighbours.

"We have mounted a rigorous search for the missing person and in the course of the search this morning we found a clue that he might have been attacked by a crocodile as at one fishing spot there are marks of tussling," said Kawirawira.

Since the last half of the year 2025 to date, the area of chief Tengani has recorded four cases of crocodile attacks where two lives have been lost while two others survived the attacks.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has reversed part of its earlier decision to delay the opening of Term Two for some schools following flood-related disruptions.

The change follows an announcement by the Roads Authority that a temporary access point at Mpasadzi Bridge along the M1 road has been opened to traffic, restoring connectivity to affected areas.

As a result, all public national and district boarding secondary schools will now open on tomorrow, 5 January as originally scheduled.

However, public schools in Nkhotakota will remain closed and are expected to open on 12 January 2026 due to ongoing flood response activities in the area.

The ministry had earlier announced a delay in the opening of some schools due to flooding that affected access routes and school operations.

Faizan Global Relief Foundation (FGRF) has donated sixteen hospital beds to Bangwe Community Clinic and South Lunzu Health Centre in Blantyre to help address persistent bed shortages.

The beds, which will be shared between the two facilities, come at a time when both centres have been struggling to accommodate patients, forcing some to sleep on the floor.

Bangwe Community Clinic, which serves a population of about 217,000 people, currently has only nine beds.

FGRF spokesperson Ibrahim Mataya said the organisation made the donation following a request from Blantyre City Mayor Isaac Jomo Osman.

Osman welcomed the support, noting that many public health facilities are facing serious challenges and require assistance from well-wishers and development partners.

Hospital in-charge for Bangwe Community Clinic, Kennedy Lowa, expressed gratitude for the donation, saying the shortage of beds had made it particularly difficult to care for patients, especially expectant mothers who were forced to sleep on the floor.
