Government has commended Thyolo District Council for ensuring the quality and timely completion of construction projects under the Governance to Enable Service Delivery (GESD).

GESD Coordinator Charles Chunga made the remarks during a World Bank Mission tour to some of the projects funded under the programme in Thyolo and Mulanje districts.

Chunga observed that Thyolo District has made significant progress in its construction works compared to other districts.

He further assured that GESD will work towards ensuring the timely release of project funds to councils to enhance the pace of implementation.

Thyolo District Commissioner, Hudson Kuphanga, attributed the district’s success to teamwork and the dedication of all stakeholders involved.

However, Kuphanga appealed to relevant authorities to consider centralising the funding process to prevent delays in paying contractors and to promote the timely delivery of projects.

National Development Party (NDP) has applauded President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika for appointing Enock Chihana as the country's Second Vice President.

NDP President Frank Tumpale Mwenefumbo described the appointment as an honour to the people of the Northern Region.

He said Chihana's appointment will not only strengthen national unity but also affirm equitable representation at the highest levels of government, fostering a more balanced and harmonious Malawi.

"His elevation to this prominent office is a testament to the inclusive spirit of our democracy and the valorisation of talent from all regions of our beloved country," Mwenefumbo said.

Social Commentator Linda Kunthembwe has equally lauded President Mutharika for ensuring equitable representation in his recent appointments, highlighting the fair distribution of posts across all regions of the country.

Malawi has recorded two new laboratory-confirmed cases of Mpox, bringing the national total to 128 since the country detected its first case in April this year.

According to a spot report released by the Public Health Institute of Malawi (PHIM), the latest infections involve an 11-year-old girl from Area 25 and a 9-year-old girl from Chilinde 1 in Lilongwe.

District Rapid Response Teams have since been dispatched to conduct contact tracing, case follow-up, and further investigations to prevent potential spread.

PHIM reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health through enhanced surveillance, early warning, and rapid containment of disease outbreaks.

Ministry of Health is yet to roll out the Mpox vaccine.

Shyreen Kalulu, 20, a student from the University of Malawi (UNIMA), is Malawi's sole representative at the 2025 Miss Geek Africa continental competition in Kigali, Rwanda, which will run from 12 to 21 October.

Miss Geek Africa 2025 is a competition for girls aged 13-21 to pitch AI-powered solutions to African problems, held during the Transform Africa Summit.

Shyreen, a final year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science, majoring in computer science, in the School of Natural and Applied Science, emerged winner after her project she presented convinced the organisers.

She presented an innovation of Automated Maternal Intelligence and Notification Assistant (AMINA), which is an AI-powered health assistant designed for pregnant and postpartum women.

Smart Africa and the Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority (MACRA) organised the competition.

She said that she is ready to break barriers and be a voice for young women who want to innovate, so that they can use technological ideas to make a difference.

This 2025 edition is aligned to the Transform Africa Summit (TAS) 2025 theme “AI for Africa: Innovate Locally, Impact Globally”.

Machinga District Hospital says it has generated K17 million in revenue from its optional paying services in its second year of operating the paying section.

The hospital's spokesperson, Wongani Nyirenda, highlighted that the paying section offers similar services to the public facility, which helps to decongest the referral centre.

The goal, according to Nyirenda, is to utilise the collected funds to enhance service delivery in the district.

The hospital's paying section generated K13 million in its first year of operation, which started in 2024, and has now surpassed that figure in its second year.

History has repeated itself as Enoch Chihana, now serving as Malawi’s Second Vice President, assumes a role once held by his late father, Chakufwa Chihana, over two decades ago.

On Sunday, President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika announced a partial cabinet, naming Enoch Chihana—President of the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD)—as Second Vice President.

Political commentator Emmanuel Mwanyongo praised President Mutharika for honouring the alliance agreement with AFORD, made ahead of the 16 September elections.

"This act speaks volumes about President Mutharika’s intention to honour his campaign pledges and serves as a strong indication of what to expect from his administration moving forward," he said.
