FIRE INCIDENT IN MZUZU.

Police in Mzuzu say over 20 structures have been destroyed by a fire that broke out at Luwinga Market in the early hours of Thursday, July 17, 2025.

Mzuzu Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Augustus Nkhwazi says the fire started around 5AM in the maize section along Devil Street.

Nkhwazi adds that various hardware items and groceries have been damaged.

He says the value of the loss is not yet known, and investigations are ongoing to find out what caused the fire.

Examinations body, the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB), is under pressure to pay over two hundred examiners their allowance arrears.

The examiners were marking this year’s Primary School Leaving Certificate Examinations at Nalikule College of Education in Lilongwe.

According to one of them, who opted for anonymity, MANEB has yet to pay the allowances two weeks after they finished their assignment.

Mizwanya Fm Community understands that each one of the examiners is entitled to receive a minimum of 230,000 Kwacha in allowances.

In an interview, the examiner expressed worry over the delays, for which no explanation has been given by the authorities.

However, our efforts to hear from the authorities at MANEB were unsuccessful, as our phone calls went unanswered.

ROAD ACCIDENT

UTM's shadow Member of Parliament for Mzimba Kafukule Constituency, Chimudima Mhango, is admitted at the Ekwendeni Mission Hospital after surviving a road accident.

Mhango, who was enroute to his constituency to attend a funeral, was travelling with his wife and daughter when the vehicle overturned.

Confirming the accident which happened at Chinungu, in Ekwendeni, Mzimba district on the M1 Road, the aspiring Parliamentarian described it as a horrifying experience.

“Our car overturned and rolled three times. I was with my wife and daughter. The child escaped unhurt, but my wife sustained some cuts. Both of us are currently admitted here,” he said.

Police in Soche have arrested 17 suspects in a targeted operation across Zingwangwa, Manja, and Soche Quarry.

According to Aaron Chilala, Soche Police spokesperson, among them is Luka Mandula, 24, who has been linked to the murder of motorcycle operator Victor Nzolima, which occurred in March this year.

Meanwhile the police say, they have recovered a stolen phone, however the victim’s motorcycle remains missing.

In a statement, Chilala has indicated that two suspects face burglary charges, four for theft, and 10 for illegal liquor sales.

Chilala has since said all suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
