Andrew Charles Murry: A Scottish Missionary Who ‘Chevened’ Me

There is a great relationship between and (UK) as far as the spread of Christianity and education is concerned in Malawi.

Growing up as a child at Mvera Trading Center in Dowa, I did not know many things until now that I am grown and picked interest in my roots.

For example, I did part of my primary education at Andrew Charles Murray (Mvera Primary School), a school which was built and named after a Scottish missionary Andrew Charles Murray who came to Malawi around 1888. Murray is just one of the Scottish missionaries who came to Africa and Malawi to spread , and work.

Around Mvera CCAP Mission, where Andrew Murray Primary School is located, there is also Mvera CCAP Mission Health Center, the CCAP church, Mvera Secondary School and Mvera Girls PVT Secondary School, which were established long time ago. But more ancient are the primary school and the church.
Honestly, growing up as a child I had been admiring location of Mvera CCAP Mission because of its breathtaking environment then.

For example, the mission used to have evergreen environment filled with Mahogany trees (Mbawa) and piped water, and beautiful houses for the staff working for the mission’s different departments (e.g health, education and the church). Those days, the Mvera CCAP Mission was being led by Reverend Mgawi.
Alexander ‘Kafumbwefumbwe’ Mlozi, my late father used to be a devoted member of the Mvera CCAP Mission.

He became a church elder in middle 2000, and among other things, he was entrusted with environment protection of the Mvera CCAP Mission campus. His passion for environment can be confirmed by the abundant trees he planted at our Mvera residence.

And closer to the church MVERA CCAP Mission there still stands an ancient building called , which used to house the Scottish missionary (Andrew Charles Murray) who spearheaded the missionary wo
