The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has called on its staff to remain professional and impartial as preparations for the June 30, 2026 by-elections gather momentum.

Speaking during a refresher training on the candidate nomination process in Mponela, Dowa, MEC Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi said nomination is a critical stage of the electoral process that must be handled in line with the country's electoral laws.

“Every step and procedure of conducting an election is laid down in the legal framework,” said Mpesi.

He said the training was aimed at strengthening staff understanding of the nomination process and ensuring that all electoral activities are conducted professionally and within the law.

Mpesi also urged election officials to uphold integrity and neutrality to help deliver free, fair and credible by-elections.

The June 30 by-elections will be held in Lilongwe City Bwaila and Machinga Mikoko constituencies, as well as Uliwa and Kanjuli wards, to fill vacancies arising from the nullification of an election and the deaths of elected representatives.

Persons with disabilities in Dzaleka Refugee Camp continue to face significant barriers in accessing economic opportunities and social protection services, Federation of Disability Organisations in Malawi (FEDOMA) Executive Director Symon Munde has said.

Munde made the remarks during a training on the Persons with Disabilities Act of 2024 organized by FEDOMA in partnership with MACODA and Salama Africa at Dzaleka Refugee Camp.

According to Munde, many persons with disabilities struggle to access farm inputs, government support programmes, and microfinance services, leaving them at risk of deeper poverty and exclusion.

“Persons with disabilities should not be pushed to the margins of society because of barriers to economic opportunities. Even in refugee settings, they deserve access to services and the chance to live a dignified life,” said Munde.

The training aimed at equipping people from Dzaleka Refugee Camp and the host community with knowledge of the Persons with Disabilities Act of 2024 to promote inclusion, particularly among youth with disabilities.

Speaking to Yetu Radio, Salama Africa Vice Executive Director Eddy Bararunyeretse said the training was designed to help youth with disabilities understand their rights under the Persons with Disabilities Act of 2024 and enable them to participate meaningfully in community development.

One of the participants, Petro Chinzumazi commended FEDOMA, MACODA, and Salama Africa for organizing the training, saying it had increased his understanding of disability rights, inclusion, and the protections provided under the law. He expressed confidence that the knowledge gained would help participants advocate for their rights and promote greater inclusion of persons with disabilities in their communities.

There is hope for improved management and coverage of the Chipiku Premier Division League following a move by the Central Region Football Association (CRFA) to involve journalists as part of match coordinators during league games.

Speaking during a media reporting orientation held at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, CRFA General Secretary Antonio Manda said the initiative aims to improve the flow of accurate and timely information from match venues to the public.

Manda said journalists are well-equipped to gather and disseminate information professionally, making them ideal partners in promoting transparency and enhancing the visibility of the league.

One of the trainers, Silver Strikers Media Officer Shadreck Maoni, emphasized the importance of professionalism, accuracy and impartiality in sports reporting.

Meanwhile, trainee journalist Eliot Tandani of Nkhoma Synod Radio said the training has equipped him with the skills needed to effectively report on league matches on behalf of CRFA.

The Department for Refuges (DFR) through its Ministry of Homeland and Security has expressed commitment in serving asylum seekers through registration process despite logistical challenge.

This follows a communique that YETU FM has in possession regarding the temporally closure of fact-sheet insurance due to technical fault of printing materials at the registration office.

The communique further state that while DFR is working on fixing the vice, registration process will continue.

Therefore, refugees and asylums seekers are urged to remain calm and continue attending to their registration schedule while authorities are working on the matter.

YETU FM understands that the registration being a process, requires approval from both UNHCR and the Department for Refugees (DRF) for one to be issued a fact-sheet.

Healthy Heart Organization (H20) Executive Director, Japhet Chris Rugema, has appealed to government, donors, and well-wishers to join hands in supporting vulnerable people living with disabilities amid the current global funding challenges.

Rugema made the appeal on Friday during a handover ceremony of food items at the Parent Association of Children with Disabilities (PACD) Respite Care Centre.

Speaking to Yetu FM, Rugema urged Dzaleka residents to take PACD as their own institution and continue supporting it regardless of the size of the contribution, emphasizing that giving is voluntary but important.

He said the donation was made possible through individuals living abroad, particularly in Canada and the United States, who continue to keep Dzaleka at heart.

“As these donations are coming from individuals in the diaspora who still care about Dzaleka, H20 found it important to mobilize support for children with disabilities by providing essential food items suitable for the current weather conditions in the camp,” said Rugema.

Reacting to the donation, PACD Chairperson Franck Djuma Musambya commended H20 for the humanitarian support at a time the association is facing serious financial challenges.

“We continue to receive a growing number of children with disabilities at our centre, but humanitarian support remains a major challenge. Despite this, PACD is doing its best to ensure that every child is treated equally,” he said.

Yetu FM understands that H20 is a refugee-led organization that focuses on mental health and psychosocial support, while also carrying out humanitarian interventions for both host communities and refugees in Dzaleka.

Some of the donated items included a 50-kilogram bag of rice, 20 litres of cooking oil, soya pieces, a bale of sugar, and a bag of sweet potatoes, among others.

The World Food Programme (WFP) Country Representative, Hyoung-Joon Lim, has reaffirmed the organization’s commitment in assisting refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced people through continued humanitarian assistance.

Lim made the remarks on Wednesday evening during the Community Development Program aired on Yetu FM.

During the program, he encouraged beneficiaries to embrace livelihood and self-reliance initiatives, warning that cash assistance could be affected if the organization fails to secure additional funding for September.

He further appealed to the Government of Malawi to review the Refugee Act to allow refugees and asylum seekers to explore livelihoods outside the camp.

The current act restricts refugees' movement and engagement in economic activities to sustain themselves. The refugees depend solely on WFP's food assistance for survival.

In reaction, residents of Dzaleka echoed Lim’s sentiments, saying they are willing to work and become self-reliant rather than depend on free assistance, but blamed government restrictions that limit their access to employment opportunities.

Refugee Support Officer in the Department for Refugees under the Ministry of Homeland Security, Raymond Chimbewa, has appealed to Dzaleka residents, stakeholders and well-wishers to work together in maintaining hygiene in the camp amid inadequate funding for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector.

Chimbewa made the appeal on Wednesday during a community clean-up campaign held at Dzaleka Refugee Camp organized by the Department for Refugees, the Dzaleka community and two Refugee-Led Organisations (RLOs), namely Community Servant and Family Health Promotion (FHP).

Speaking to Yetu FM, Chimbewa urged residents to adopt a positive mindset towards cleanliness and take responsibility for hygiene practices at community level without solely depending on authorities.

He warned that due to congestion in the camp, failure by residents to properly manage hygiene could expose the area to outbreaks of communicable diseases.

Commenting on the initiative, Community Servant official Wibuta Kabiona supported Chimbewa’s sentiments, saying active community participation in hygiene practices is key to preventing the spread of infectious diseases in the camp.

Health authorities at Dzaleka Refugee Camp have attributed shortage of medical personnel, inadequate drug supplies and rapid population growth as major challenges affecting service delivery at Dzaleka Health Centre.

The concerns were raised on Tuesday during a familiarization visit by a United States-based organization, Care Learning, at the refugee camp.

Briefing the delegation at the health facility, Officer In-Charge Henry Lali said frequent transfers of health workers by government from one public health facility to another continue to disrupt operations at the centre and negatively affect healthcare delivery.

“Most of the trained personnel we receive do not stay long because after gaining experience they are transferred to other facilities, and this leaves gaps in service delivery,” says Lali.

Lali said newly recruited health workers from colleges and universities are often deployed to Dzaleka Health Centre for orientation and experience, but are later transferred to other facilities once they gain adequate training.

He further said continued influx of asylum seekers into the camp has placed enormous pressure on the facility, resulting in overwhelming conditions despite efforts by staff to provide services to both refugees and surrounding communities within its catchment area.

“Our population continues to grow every day, but the resources and workforce remain the same, making it difficult for us to meet the increasing demand for healthcare services,” he added.

Lali has since appealed to government, donors, well-wishers and other stakeholders to consider including Dzaleka Health Centre in their financial and material support plans to improve healthcare services at the camp.

Chief Community Development Officer responsible for Literacy and Adult Education, Samuel Ziba, has commended DVV International for complementing government efforts towards achieving Malawi Vision 2063 through inclusive wealth generation and promotion of women’s economic independence and entrepreneurship.

Ziba made the remarks during a learning visit organised by DVV International Malawi involving its Mozambican counterpart at Mononga Community Learning Centre in Dowa District and Mvalo Community Learning Centre in Ntchisi District.

He said literacy remains key in empowering communities and promoting self-actualisation among citizens, describing community learning centres as vital platforms for socio-economic transformation.
“Literacy is crucial in empowering communities because it helps people realise their potential and actively participate in wealth creation activities,” said Ziba.

Ziba further disclosed that government plans to establish a community learning centre in every constituency across the country as part of efforts to promote inclusive wealth creation and community empowerment.

Speaking during the visit, DVV International Mozambique Country Director Jose’ Mucuapa described community learning centres as an important tool in advancing adult literacy education. He said the Mozambican delegation had learnt a lot from Malawi’s community learning centres, noting that the centres are well organised and contributing meaningfully to national development.

“We have learnt a lot from Malawi’s community learning centres and we intend to apply some of the lessons back in Mozambique because these centres are making a visible impact in communities,” said Mucuapa.

Meanwhile, DVV International Southern Africa Regional Director Johann Heilmann said the organisation will consider introducing additional vocational skills such as carpentry, plumbing and electrical installation into adult literacy programmes to further empower communities.

Yetu FM understands that 129 tailors have graduated from Mononga Community Learning Center since the establishment of the center by DVV International.
