JOB OPPORTUNITY
Partners in Hope (PIH) is a faith-based Malawian Non-Governmental organisation that was established in 2004 to offer equitable health services and is founded on a robust commitment to support the National HIV and AIDS response in Malawi. PIH has a medical centre that operates a general outpatient clinic, inpatient wards, as well as a public HIV- focused Moyo Outpatient Centre of Excellence. PIH is incorporated under the provisions of the Trustees Incorporation Act, 1962, in Malawi. INTERN OPPORTUNITY
Through its Medical Department, PIH is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and qualified individual to be deployed at the Medical Centre in Lilongwe.
MEDICAL OFFICERS ( 2 POSITIONS)
Job Summary
Reporting to the Medical Director, the position is responsible for providing direct patient care in its Outpatient department clinic, Dalitso Clinic and Inpatient ward, Thandizo Ward. In addition, the incumbent may be required to support patient care in Moyo Clinic as needed. The role will involve working day, evening, and weekend shifts, based on the clinic’s operational needs.
Key duties and responsibilities
Serve as a medical resource for the organisation, with a particular focus on supporting the clinical team.
Monitor and provide general care to both inpatients and outpatients, fostering a climate of trust, empathy, and compassion.
Maintain accurate and detailed records of patients’ medical histories, diagnoses, and treatments.
Stay current with medical developments and best practices through reading, research, and attending relevant trainings.
Conduct thorough examinations and evaluate patients’ symptoms to determine appropriate diagnoses.
Prescribe and interpret laboratory tests to identify underlying infections or abnormalities.
Order and interpret imaging studies and, when necessary, refer patients to a radiologist for specialised imaging.
Prescribe medications and provide clear instructions for their administration.
Offer advice on healthy lifestyle habits (e.g., diet, hygiene) and preventive measures to support overall well-being.
Perform routine check-ups to assess health status and detect early signs of illness.
Collaborate with clinical teams to continuously improve the quality of clinical and diagnostic services.
Ensure effective coordination and communication between the Medical Department and other departments.
Monitor the quality and appropriateness of medical assessments and interventions.
Participate regularly in departmental and unit meetings, providing input and oversight on clinical matters.
Periodically represent Partners In Hope (PIH) in key engagements with the Ministry of Health, National AIDS Commission, Medical Council of Malawi, and other relevant stakeholders concerning clinical and diagnostic services at PIH.
Maintain an active portfolio of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities in line with regulatory and professional standards.
Participate in weekend and night duty rotations at Dalitso Clinic and Thandizo Ward as scheduled.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge:
Strong understanding of clinical medicine, diagnostics, pharmacology, and patient management.
In-depth knowledge of Malawi’s national treatment guidelines, protocols, and health systems.
Familiarity with communicable and non-communicable diseases, including HIV, TB, hypertension, and diabetes.
Knowledge of infection prevention and control (IPC) standards and patient safety practices.
Awareness of public health principles and community-based healthcare models.
Understanding of medical ethics, confidentiality, and patient rights.
Skills:
Excellent diagnostic and clinical decision-making skills.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with patients, families, and health professionals.
Effective documentation and record-keeping, including proficiency in electronic medical records (EMRs).
Good organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise effectively.
Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office, email, clinical databases).
Ability to analyse lab results and interpret imaging and diagnostic tests accurately.
Abilities:
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Ability to handle medical emergencies calmly and efficiently.
Adaptability to work in resource-limited and fast-paced environments.
Ability to maintain professionalism, compassion, and empathy under pressure.
Commitment to continuous learning and staying updated on current clinical practices.
Capacity to supervise, mentor, and provide guidance to junior medical staff or interns.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
MBBS
A minimum of seven (7) years of post-graduate clinical experience is required.
Demonstrated strong understanding of general medicine, with extensive hands-on experience in both government, private and mission hospital or NGO-supported health facilities settings is highly desirable.
