Karonga Civil Society Organization Chairperson Edgar Phiri has urged journalists in Karonga to maintain their integrity and resist the temptation of being motivated by money when writing articles about politicians and political parties ahead of the September 16 general elections.
Phiri said this Saturday during the Karonga Press Club (KPC) Annual General Meeting when he graced the event as the guest of honor.
"Journalists are crucial to providing the rightful information to voters and should not write articles that favor a particular candidate or party, as this can anger communities and bring tension," he said.
Nathan Sakala, District Program Officer for NICE Trust, highlighted the importance of collaboration between the media and civil society organizations in educating and informing the masses about their right to vote, particularly amid concerns of voter apathy and political violence.
Wezzie Mwangonde, Vice Chairperson for the Karonga Press Club, stressed the significance of the AGM, noting that the media will play a vital role in educating the masses to make informed choices about their leaders as the country heads towards the general elections.
"An informed electorate is a powerful tool for shaping the future of our nation," she said.
The AGM held under the theme "Strengthening Press Freedom for Credible and Conflict-Free Elections," was financially supported by KPC, Jobson Msowoya and Honable Mungasulwa Mwambande.
