The Karonga Press Club (KPC) on Friday led learners at Mwenitete Primary School in the area of Senior Chief Kilupula, Karonga District, in planting over 100 tree seedlings.
This initiative forms part of the club's ongoing commitment to community engagement and supporting the national afforestation drive.
Adams Wundaninge, the club's chairperson, emphasized that journalists have a vital role beyond reporting on environmental issues.
"As journalists, we frequently cover stories on environmental degradation and the impacts of climate change. We believe it's essential to move beyond writing articles and take direct action to protect our environment," he said.
Wundaninge expressed gratitude to the Karonga District Council through District Commissioner Willard Mwambo and the District Forest Officer’s department, as well as UDK Consultancy, for their valuable support in making the activity a success.
The headteacher of Mwenitete Primary School, Rachael Munthali, praised the Karonga Press Club for choosing the school as a site for tree planting, noting that it would help create a greener and more sustainable learning environment for the pupils.
However, she highlighted a pressing challenge at the school: with a total enrollment of 1,048 learners, only those in Standard Eight have access to desks. This shortage severely affects the comfort and concentration of the younger students, hindering their ability to learn effectively. She appealed for additional support in the form of desks to improve the overall learning conditions.
Representing the District Forest Officer, Assistant Forest Officer Mathelo Phiri urges teachers and learners at the school to take good care of the trees.
