‎The National Children’s Commission says it is impressed with the level of care and protection that children at the Mwanza evacuation centre are receiving.
‎
‎ Commissioner Lyka Milanzi told Linga FM Online that the commission met Social Welfare and DoDMA officials on Friday to appreciate the services and relief assistance being provided to children who are coming into the country from South Africa.
‎
‎Milanzi said a child-friendly space has been established where children are looked after while their parents access services and collect their belongings.
‎
‎She added that children are also receiving food, health services and vaccinations, and no cases of missing children have been reported.
‎
‎She commended stakeholders for the support and encouraged parents and guardians to register their children before returning to their respective districts.

Leader of Opposition in Parliament Simplex Chithyola Banda has told the House Friday morning that government needs to take human rights activist Sylvester Namiwa to court to be charged instead of keeping him in police custody.

Banda said this when he shared what he has seen at police where Namiwa is being kept.

Chithyola Banda claimed that Namiwa was in a bad state at Lingadzi Police, as he has been kept with no food, worrying that if kept longer in those conditions, his health may be affected.

However leader of the house Jappie Mhango has questioned Chithyoka Banda's sudden change of heart, alleging that during the MCP rule, the party almost killed Namiwa.

Mhango has hinted that every citizen will be held accountable for their actions and words and said right now the police officers is doing its rightful job.

Banja la Mtsogolo (BLM) has urged journalists to improve the quality of abortion reporting by conducting thorough research and ensuring information shared with the public is accurate and evidence-based.

Speaking during a media workshop held on Thursday at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, BLM Senior Marketing and Communications Manager Simeone Thodi said journalists should use neutral and respectful language when reporting on abortion to help reduce stigma and focus on facts and health outcomes.

Thodi said responsible reporting can help shape informed public discussions and promote a better understanding of abortion-related issues.

Meanwhile, the programmes manager for young voices organization, Emmanuel Namphonya, encouraged journalists to work together with organizations specializing in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) to ensure their stories are balanced and free from misinformation.

UTM Party President Dalitso Kabambe has condemned the arrest of CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa, describing it as a worrying development for democracy and freedom of expression.

Speaking after going to Lingadzi Police Station to visit Namiwa, Kabambe said he was denied access to see him and was asked to return the following day.

He said the development raises concerns that Namiwa could be facing the same pattern of arrests experienced in the past for speaking out on issues of national interest.

Kabambe said defenders of democracy should not be arrested for raising concerns and providing checks and balances to government.

He added that if Namiwa is suspected of committing an offence, authorities should follow due process and clearly explain the charges against him.
