The Department of Animal Health and Livestock Development under the Ministry of Agriculture has announced new prices for livestock products and services, with the revised rates taking effect from June 2026.

The new price schedule shows increases across dairy cattle, beef cattle, and goats for both smallholder and commercial farmers.

Among the notable changes, a half-bred Friesian cross cow will now cost MK500,000 for smallholder farmers, up from MK300,000, while commercial buyers will pay MK650,000, up from MK450,000. The price of a pure Jersey bull has also increased to MK800,000 for smallholder farmers and MK1 million for commercial buyers.

In the beef cattle category, a half-Brahman cross cow will now be sold at MK450,000 for smallholder farmers and MK600,000 for commercial buyers. Prices for Malawi zebu bulls and other cattle breeds have also been adjusted upwards.

Goat prices have not been spared, with a pure-bred Boer buck now costing MK180,000 for smallholder farmers and MK230,000 for commercial buyers.

The department has also raised live-weight cattle prices, with cull cows now pegged at MK6,500 per kilogram for smallholder farmers and MK10,000 per kilogram for commercial buyers.

Good Health Organisation has expressed concern that the growing demand for several years of work experience by many employers is limiting employment opportunities for young people despite their academic qualifications and potential.

Speaking during a youth employment skills training held in Kasungu on Friday, Good Health Programmes Manager Milca Tomoka said many graduates struggle to secure jobs because employers often prioritize experienced candidates, leaving little room for first-time job seekers.

Tomoka said the organization organized the training to equip young people with practical skills in job application writing and interview preparation, thereby increasing their competitiveness in the labour market.

One of the participants, Jonathan Chikombe, commended Good Health for offering the training free of charge, saying it had enhanced his confidence and improved his understanding of how to respond to interview questions and prepare professional job applications.

Chikombe observed that the experience requirements set by many companies and institutions continue to disadvantage young people who have recently completed their studies and are seeking to gain their first professional experience.

The training forms part of Good Health’s efforts to empower young people with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the increasingly competitive job market.
