This tragic loss is a significant blow to democracy and society as a whole, considering their substantial contributions to promoting democratic values and the rule of law worldwide. As an African watch dog and a champion of the Journalism That Matters campaign, We are particularly concerned about the implications for my continent. The power dynamics in Africa often result in local media being controlled by the powerful, making the departure of these skilled journalists even more alarming. Their absence curtails the accurate reporting of events across Africa, representing a significant loss for the continent and a gain for those who undermine social justice. We stand in solidarity with all the affected heroes.

Malawi’s recent presidential pardon of a convicted leader of an international wildlife trafficking syndicate has drawn widespread criticism from conservationists, anti-corruption advocates, and governance experts.

Among the 21 prisoners pardoned by President Lazarus Chakwera over the Easter holiday was Chinese national Yunhua Lin. Lin, considered a kingpin of one of Africa’s most notorious illegal wildlife trafficking networks, was sentenced to 14 years in prison in 2021 after being convicted of multiple offences including the possession and trafficking of pangolin scales, elephant ivory, hippo teeth, and rhino horn.

As most commentators have been expressing dissatisfaction over president Lazarus Chakwera’s frequent travels both locally and internationally, President of the Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops advised Chakwera that in the spirit of exercising prudence of resource management, not all invitations should be honoured. Mtumbuka also took time to touch on thorny issues in which MDF grabbed 17.27 hectares of land from local residents of Kasasile in Nkhatabay. Kondwani Nyondo brings more details in the report.

It's close to a year since Lu Ke, popularly known as Susu was arrested and charged with 14 counts in relation to his racism video exposed by BBC Africa Eye.

Big and an unswerable questions remain:

Where is he at the moment and how far is his case?

How is the situation for the victims and what role has government and other stakeholders played towards their physical and psycho social support?

Malawi's food insecurity is exposing children to different sort of abuse including sexual, physical, and psychological.

Recently, uncivilized mob surrounded a hungry girl in Nsanje district, burnt her hands and severely injured her face for a mare reason of being found in some one's maize garden with green maize.

The owner who ordered the mob to attack the girl is reportedly walking freely. that matter.
