CCJP wants President Chakwera to act on NOCMA, ACB saga

The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) has asked President Lazarus Chakwera to suspend officers implicated in alleged corrupt fuel deals at the National Oil Company of Malawi (Nocma).

The commission has also asked Chakwera to demonstrate his sincerity and genuine commitment to supporting the ACB and its director general Martha Chizuma by, among others, providing security to officers at the bureau.

Former Acting Nocma CEO Helen Buluma implicated Nocma's board Chairperson Colleen Zamba and Secretary for Energy Alphonso Chikuni in alleged fuel procurement scsndals at the institution.

Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo has announced of the unconditional withdrawal of charges levelled against ACB Director General Martha Chizuma.

Mvalo has told parliament that President Chakwera has also suspended the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Steven Kayuni pending further inquiry into the arrest of Chizuma.

A commission of inquiry composed of several individuals including former Inspector General of police, Loti Dzonzi and other has since been instituted.

On ACB boss Martha Chizuma arrest- Writes Idriss Nassah
The pre-dawn raid on Martha's house was heavy-handed and a tad embarrassing.

She had to beg the officers to look away as she scrambled for something appropriate to wear; it was a hot and humid night in Lilongwe and people often sleep as minimalists would.

When we arrived at the house, we too were shocked by the machismo on display. You'd be forgiven to think that they were there to arrest a dangerous bank bandit or an unrepentant and cantankerous Mneneri Joshua Mbele. Nay, they were there for poor Martha. We asked why they had not simply summoned her to present herself at Area 30, and she would have.

"Orders from above," is all the answer we got.

Missing AIP MK750 million...
The Joint Parliamentary Committee says that the MK180 million reported to have been repaid from the MK750 million did not come from a foreign bank. This implies that the repayment was made within the country. The Joint Parliamentary Committee wonders who made this transaction.
