Let's look into the step by step procedure to build this kind of automatic changeover.

Single phase automatic changeover with one contactor, one timer and an alarm.
1. Connect the live wire and the neutral wire of the utility power supply (PHCN) to the terminals L1 & L2 of the contactor respectively.

2. Connect terminal L1 to terminal A1 of the contactor.
3. Connect terminal L2 to terminal A2 of the contactor.

4. From A1 terminal of the contactor, connect a wire to A1 terminal of the timer.

5. From A2 terminal of the contactor , connect a wire to A2 terminal of the timer.

6. From A1 terminal of the contactor, connect a wire to common terminal of the timer (C).

7. Connect one wire of the alarm to Normally closed terminal of the timer (NC), and connect the second wire of the alarm to the A2 terminal of the same timer.

Note that the A1 & A2 of the timer are the coil terminals ( energizing terminals)

8. Connect the live wire and the neutral wire of the generator supply to the terminals 21 and 31 of the contactor respectively.

9. Connect terminal 22 to T1 terminal of the contactor, then connect terminal 32 to T2 terminal of the contactor.

Connect the supply load wires to terminals T1 and T2 of the contactor.

Lets look into surge protector / voltage monitor
Looking at it, you will see that the over voltage protection value is 270V.

Under voltage protection value is 170V.
Which means that if the voltage input supply is more than the over voltage protection value, the device will not give output supply.

And if the input supply voltage is less than the under voltage protection value, the device will not give out put voltage.

The source voltage must be within the working voltage before the device can give output.

So immediately you supply voltage to this device, it will first monitor the voltage before functioning.

If the voltage is high or low, it will not supply output voltage.
And it has tolerance of + - 5%

And the spring you see enables the switch to return back to origin immediately the coil of the of the contactor is de-energized.

This is what keeps the contactor in off position unless its been energized or pushed inside.
But immediately there is no current to the coil of the contactor, the switch returns back to origin.

When current is been supplied to the coil terminals of a contactor through A1 & A2 terminals, there will be a magnetic force formed around the coil of the contactor.

The work of a magnet is to attract any metal that is closer to it.

So immediately there is a magnetic force around the coil of the contactor, it will attract the metal inside the casing of the contactor, and because the metal is attached to the switch of the contactor, it will forcefully drag the switch of that contactor down, thereby switching on the contactor.

Infact, timer and pin relay are the same in every aspect,

The only different between the two is that timer has to delay before it will function due to time attached to it.

But immediately you supply current to pin relay, if immediately function.
