They want to kill me – Usi

Vice President Dr. Michael Usi has claimed that he is on a hit list, alleging that some individuals want to kill him because of his outspoken criticism of government’s corruption and inefficiency.

Speaking in Chigumula, Blantyre, Dr. Usi said he was aware of the threats but insisted they would not deter him.

He did not disclose who might be behind the alleged plot.

The Veep who is set to go race with his boss, President Dr Lazarus Chakwera in the September 16, 2025 presidential election, also highlighted growing tensions with the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), suggesting that some political rivals are figuratively “aiming a rifle” at him as he continues to expose wrongdoing in government.

Government officials and the MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwira are yet to respond to the claims.

Mumba Might miss Chakwera's nomination papers presentation

He posts:

I Took campaign to Kamusalango, Kakombwe, Kapalankhwali, Phala, Wanitaya and Kaonekela today. Last week we were at Kamubanga, Kamhluzi, Kamwankhuku, Mtemera, and Kapija. Real and meaningful developmental politics. I challenged those that patronized my meetings that should any of the aspiring candidates do more in terms of development than me, then they must vote for him. If no one matches my development initiative, then they must vote for me. And this will be my campaign message at Constituency level.

Time for primitive politics ili kumala. Its time for people over politics. Let's compete on ideas and development initiatives.

Tomorrow we continue with the same in Euthini Ward. Today we were in Mbalachanda Ward.

Mutharika's Choice of Running Mate

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika is scheduled to present his nomination papers for the presidential race to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) tomorrow in Lilongwe.

According to the MEC calendar, Mutharika will submit his papers at 10:00 a.m.

The former president is also expected to unveil his running mate during the event — a decision that has generated widespread speculation across social media platforms.

As anticipation builds, one question continues to dominate public discussion: "Who has Mutharika chosen as his running mate?"

The journey started with Dr. Chilima, a young intelligent man, ready to give the best to his country, he accepted to be the running mate not just for himself but to prove that the youth are able, it was time for innovation, indeed, 2014 presence of Dr. Chilima pushed the youth to DPP. But that hope didn't last until a certain group came for their bellies and created discord between APM and SKC.

In 2020, us Malawians asked Dr. Chilima to humble himself, for the second time to deputise the elderly, like before, it didn't last, we all saw how Chilima was demonized, victimised, demoralised by a man who claimed to be a pastor. The hope we had didn't come, it ended in the grave, talent gone, leader gone

My fellow youths, this country we are in majority, as a majority we should start making right choices for our country. We have tried DPP, you all saw it, they are back unapologetically, the same people that made you bleed before, are here to take power, not for any of your good, rather their bellies. Similarly MCP wants to retain power, not for the flush toilets, but to continue being pregnant men whilst we are tormenting in abjuct poverty and humiliation.

It is time to say "enough is enough". Let us gather in one space to save Malawi. Enough of a few selfish individuals, it is our time to rise in arms. Together we can win this battle. Our economy is in total mess, the impact of which we are going to bear than anyone else, these toxic loans shall be on our heads longer than anyone else. Let us rise to this occasion and give our vote to a deserving candidate fit and skilled to solve the economic problems, come north, centre, east and south for the 3rd Revolution championed by Dr. Kabambe

Joyce Banda returns Kachali as Running mate, Tobias Picks Nutritionist Mdebwe

Former President Dr. Joyce Banda is reportedly set to rekindle her political alliance with former Vice President Khumbo Kachali, selecting him as her running mate for the upcoming September 16, 2025 general elections.

The development comes as Banda, who will represent the People’s Party (PP) in the polls, is scheduled to officially present her nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) tomorrow.

Reliable sources within the PP have told The Word Newspaper that Banda’s choice marks a significant political reunion, with talks suggesting a formal alliance between the People’s Party and Kachali’s Freedom Party.

“The two parties will walk together into the September 16 elections, and this will be confirmed during tomorrow’s nomination presentation,” said the source.

Kachali, who leads the Freedom Party, served as Banda’s Vice President from 2012 to 2014 before their fallout ahead of the 2014 elections.

Meanwhile, Independent presidential candidate Milward Tobias, an economist and governance expert, has named Henry Mdebwe, a seasoned nutritionist, as his running mate.

Tobias confirmed the selection a while ago to Nation Publications Limited.

“For his profile, you can check online,” Tobias told the Nation, referring to Mdebwe’ credentials.

Available information shows that Mdebwe boasts over 20 years of experience in the field of nutrition.

According to the MEC’s nomination schedule, Joyce Banda is expected to be the first candidate to present her papers tomorrow, while Tobias is slated to submit his nomination on Friday.

Mighty Wanderers FC Head Coach Bob Mpinganjira has defended his decision to bench some of his regulars during the league match against Mzuzu City Hammers at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday.

Speaking in the aftermath of the 1-0 win against the Hammers, the Nomads' gaffer insists rotation of players is appropriate at this stage.

Said Mpinganjira; "we have the depth of squad and we have many games coming ahead including cup games. We needed to rest some of the regular players to avoid burning out."

Mpinganjira has however admitted that it was challenging to pe*****te the Hammers and get a goal because the visitors had "parked the bus".

"I was not surprised with the outcome of the match [against Hammers]. I even said prior to the game that we were anticipating a very tough game looking at the current position of our opponents [Hammers] on the table. Their plan was just to defend and frustrate us which they successfully managed until in the 90th minute. I am however happy that at the end of it all, we have three points in the bag," said Mpinganjira.

Isaac Kaliati came out of the bench to convert a 90th minute spot kick after another substitute, Wisdom Mpinganjira was brought down inside the danger zone.

Following the win, the Nomads have moved five points clear on top of the league table with 32 points. They have three games to finish the first round of the league, against Moyale Barracks(away), Chitipa United (home) and Civil Service United (away).
