MDF Commander- In-Chief Dr Lazarus Chakwera Writes

While here in Nigeria, I have been closely following the developments back home, and I strongly condemn the violence that marred recent demonstrations in the Capital.

The right of Malawians to protest peacefully is not only enshrined in the Constitution, but also a birthright. As such, both the violence and destruction of property that took place during these demonstrations are totally unacceptable and have no place in our democracy.

I have therefore directed all relevant state agencies to act swiftly and decisively to restore calm, as well as to investigate what happened and ensure that all those who violated the law are held accountability.

As President, I will be expecting a preliminary report on findings from both the Ministers of Homeland Security and Defense upon my return, which will form the basis of further actions we will take to ensure this does not happen again and that the 80 days between now and Election Day are peaceful and violence-free.

In the meantime, let us each remain vigilant against those who seek to use our right to protest as an occasion to perpetrate violence and lawlessness for political gain.

Let us not allow them to tear down the country we are working so hard to re-build.

MDF's incompetence 'disgusts' donors, CSOs

The Malawi's security agencies have come under heavy ceiling for negligently failing to conduct their noble duty of protecting Citzens during anti- Mtalimanja protests yesterday.

The protestors were hacked, macheted and had their vehicles torched by an unidentified Panga-wielding who in the process, mishandled Human rights activist Sylvester Namiwa and bayoneted a female Police officer.

A joint statement dated June 25, 2025, issued by heads of mission to Malawi, says the incidents are contrary to the republican constitution which guarantees right to assembly and protest.

They have since warned that Malawi's democratic values are under threat.

"We are troubled by reports illustrating a trend of violence during peaceful and lawful demonstrations in Malawi's cites.

We call on the government of Malawito uphold the rule of Law, protect the people of Malawi and conduct investigation into any incident of violence. Malawi security forces have a duty to uphold the right of freedom of assembly for all citizens," says the statement in part.

The country's quasi - religious body Public Affairs Committee ( PAC) has described the incident as barbaric as it contravenes the country's democratic principles.

In a statment co-signed by PAC Chairperson Monsignor Patrick Thawale and Spokesperson Bishop Gilford Matonga, the body says ; " Recalling that the Malawi Police service gave assurance to the 6th All - inclusive Stakeholders Conference delegates compounds the contradictory conduct of the enforcement agencies."

Rulling party's Panga - wielding thugs nearly burnt Namiwa alive as female cop macheted

Panga-wielding men, suspected to have been sent by some Malawi Congress Party (MCP) officials on Thursday, mishandled Human rights activist Sylvester Namiwa and bayoneted a female Police officer with a Panga in line of duty at Lilongwe Community Centre Ground.

The attack occurred at the start of demonstrations Namiwa was leading in quest to force the resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja and Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi.

Moments after the protestors had started thronged the vicinity, an unregistered Toyota Fortuner drive directly towards a group of police officers standing between two Malawi Defence Force (MDF) armoured vehicles.

From the vehicle, egressed Panga-wielding men who ambushed Namiwa and began to manhandle him up in full view of both police and MDF personnel.

One of the assailants kept asking, “Kodi uyu ndi ndani?” (“Who is this person?”) while pulling him aside.

Namiwa was seen pleading with the officers for help, but to no avail.

“Akulu akulu, dzikoli lafika pamenepa? A polisi, mukundisiya anthu awa apange nane zimene akufuna? Ndithandizeni!” he cried. (“Has this country really come to this? Officers, are you just letting these people do whatever they want to me? Help me!”)

The police watched mercilessly as the incident unfolded, stepping back or sideways whenever Namiwa tried to seek refuge among them.

One Police officer was held shouting at Namiwa, telling him ; " Ukawawuze a inspector general Zimenezo ( Go and tell the inspector general that)."

When an unidentified female cop tried to control the hooligans, they started throwing their pangas to her. She was seen crying as she begged help from her colleagues.

Meanwhile, the MDF officers on top of the armoured vehicles kept fidgeting with their guns but did not intervene.

We would rather hug a missile than to return there - Israel based Malawians

Zodiak is reporting that some Malawians living in Israel say there is tight security , all houses have bomb shelters in the vicinity and the bomb shelters have also been placed in several strategic places across the country.

It says even though there's intense pressure, Government should not bring them back but rather let the survive in the war torn country.

The publication has quoted Brito John Mota and Swabuli Affack as having said have they are receiving message alerts on incoming missiles and are able to hide in bomb shelters in good time.

In recent weeks, there has been an increased exchange of missiles between Israel and lran after Israel killed key military officials in Tehran which it accuses of producing nuclear weapons.
