Youth Empowerment for Political Action (YEPA) has expressed concern that many young people in Malawi are not being given meaningful roles in decision-making, both within political parties and in the country at large.

Speaking to CAN today, YEPA Executive Director Dalitso Chauluka said the organisation has been following the manifestos of major political parties and has observed that none have shown genuine commitment to empowering young people to become decision-makers.

Chauluka further accused political parties of making empty promises about improving the lives of young people.

He noted that some politicians have launched various activities in communities, such as football tournaments, under the guise of youth empowerment, which he described as mere campaign strategies aimed at attracting support rather than genuinely uplifting the youth.

However YEPA has urged young people across the country to turn out in large numbers to vote on 16 September, stressing that their vote is their right and warning them not to be used by any politician.

Prior to the start of the campaign period, YEPA had petitioned Parliament to amend the law to allow Malawians under the age of 35 to contest for the presidency.
