One of the realest we have to encounter from the hearts of HatsTsalah Media
I had the privilege of being interviewed by BRIAN BAND of BBC. He asked me 7 questions on Music and the Gospel. Here’s the first part of the interview:
BRIAN: Masomphenya, are you a gospel artist?
MASOMPHENYA: If by the Gospel we mean the message that God is Holy and we are all sinners in need of Jesus, the only true savior; if by the Gospel we mean the Good News that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, then certainly, yes, I am a gospel artist.
BRIAN: Don’t you think you’re limiting yourself to a small audience by being a gospel artist? Whereas if you do positive music, you can reach a wider audience and address more relevant issues?
MASOMPHENYA: No offense Brian, I’m afraid it seems to me you don’t know what the Gospel really is. Based on Romans 1:16, the Gospel is THE POWER OF GOD for salvation to everyone who believes. We are all born sinners. Hence the whole world needs the Gospel. So, by default, a bigger audience is already available that needs to hear the Gospel. And in case you didn’t know, the Gospel is holistic. It addresses every aspect of man: moral, social, psychological, physical, and spiritual, it touches everything. Christians don't have to water down the Gospel to address moral issues. By its nature, the Gospel has practical implications on all issues affecting human beings. That means we can pretty much sing about anything without diluting the Gospel. Brian, when a sinner gets saved, their whole life changes, relationships, work ethic, approach to studies; everything gets transformed by the power of God, the Gospel.
BRIAN: You’re sounding as if you don’t sin at all. Do you ever sin?
MASOMPHENYA: Perhaps this might surprise you, but no human being is perfect in themselves. Our only hope is in Christ Jesus. 1 John 1:8 says if we, Christians, claim we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. So, no! I’m not sinless. But guess what? Verse 9 proclaims the Good News. It says if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. So, by God’s grace, I confess my sin to God and He forgives me. I’m sorry to ask Brian, but do you know the meaning of sanctification?
BRIAN: No, I don’t. What is that? Sa…..nti what?
MASOMPHENYA: Sanctification. To simplify this, let me quote the Westminster Shorter Catechism. It says sanctification is the work of God’s free grace, whereby we are renewed in the whole man after the image of God, and are enabled more and more to die unto sin, and live unto righteousness. So Brian, God sanctifies everyone who believes in Him. God is making His children into His likeness, holy. He’s helping us to fight our sins and live in righteousness. That is the blessed hope of all believers. To be continued…
