A University of Malawi student, Fortune Kamphinda, has developed an app that detects floods and forecasts weather. The app uses real-time data to identify areas at high risk of heavy rainfall, generate alerts, and display weather patterns on interactive satellite maps. Kamphinda aims to collaborate with the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS) and envisions a future where the department uses software developed by Malawians.

Bushiri Sues Former DPP Over Daughter’s Death

Prophet Shepherd Bushiri has announced plans to take legal action against former Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Steve Kayuni, whom he accuses of unlawfully blocking his late daughter from traveling abroad for medical treatment in 2021.

In a statement posted on his official page, Bushiri recounted the events that occurred during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when his eight-year-old daughter was scheduled to travel from Malawi to Kenya for urgent medical care.

According to Bushiri, an injunction was issued by Mr. Kayuni at Lilongwe International Airport, allegedly acting on instructions from unnamed South African government officials, preventing the child from leaving the country.

“My daughter, already in a fragile condition, was detained at the airport for five days while my legal team worked tirelessly to overturn the injunction,” Bushiri wrote. “By the time the court granted permission for her to travel, it was too late—she had lost her life.”

The Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) leader said although his family had forgiven Mr. Kayuni, accountability was still necessary. “Forgiveness does not remove accountability. There are far too many individuals in authority who misuse their positions without consequence. This time, the law must speak,” he stated.

Bushiri added that he has instructed his legal team to institute legal proceedings against the former DPP to explain which South African officials directed him to take what he described as an “unlawful and inhumane action against an innocent child.”

He emphasized that the case is not only about his daughter but also about protecting the rights of all Malawian children. “Every child has the right to life and access to medical care, as enshrined in the Constitution of Malawi and protected under international human rights law

Hon.Fredo Penjani Kalua, a prominent Hip hop artist and newly elected Member of Parliament for Soche Zingwangwa Constituency, made his first appearance in the August House.

Kalua made his speech marking as genesis of his presence in the Chamber by acknowledging Prof. Peter Muthalika's State of Nation Address (SONA), for its straightforwardness and humility. Among other things, Kalua vowed to push for the development needs of his constituents, including good roads, clean water, and improved healthcare services at the Zingwangwa Health Center.

"Women sometimes do deliver on floors at Zingwangwa Health Center" Worried Kalua. As this needs immediate efforts to be in place.

About Education and Constituency Developments, as stated in Prof. Muthalika's Manifesto, Kalua stated it as nice development, though needs some efforts and minor improvements. " Education must not be priveledge but a pathway as it is seed of justice and progress." Kalua said.

As one of the youth Parliamentarian, Hon. Fredo Kalua, emphasized the need for youth empowerment and Opportunity. The youth are the major stakeholders of our economy hence need to be empowered with much support. Added Kulua.
