Man fined K100,000 for illegal fuel transportation

The Karonga First Grade Magistrate’s Court has convicted and fined a 23-year-old man, Wilson Mwambacha, K100,000 for transporting liquid petroleum without a license.

Mwambacha was arrested on June 26 after being found in possession of 12 jerricans of liquid petroleum, each containing 20 litres, which he was transporting without a permit.

Appearing before the court on July 1, Mwambacha pleaded guilty to the charge. In mitigation, he asked for leniency, stating that he was a first-time offender and unaware that transporting fuel without a license was illegal.

However, the state prosecutor, Robert Mkandawire, pushed for a stiffer penalty, noting that such offenses are becoming increasingly common in the district.

“This is a serious offense under the law. Regardless of ignorance, the act of transporting hazardous substances without proper documentation poses risks to public safety and should be discouraged,” Mkandawire argued.

Passing judgment, First Grade Magistrate Julius Kalambo agreed with the prosecution and ordered Mwambacha to pay a K100,000 fine or serve five months in prison with hard labour in default. The court cited Section 17(d), as read with Section 42 of the Liquid Fuels and Gas (Production and Supply) Act.

Meanwhile, Karonga Police Spokesperson Margret Msiska warned the public against engaging in illegal transportation of fuel.

“People should be aware that handling or transporting fuel without authorization is a criminal offense. We are stepping up efforts to curb such practices to ensure public safety,” she said.

The confiscated fuel has since been forfeited to the Malawi government.

Mwambacha hails from Namchimbu Village, Traditional Authority Mwaulambia, in Chitipa District.

Temwah and Phondo Unveil Inspiring Theme Song for Malawi Youth Summit

Well-known female musicians Temwah and Theresa Phondo were unveiled by the National Youth Council of Malawi at the end of June as the voices behind the 2025 National Youth Summit theme song, titled Kuthekera. The song was released later in June through social media platforms.

The anthem captures the spirit of this year's summit theme: Harnessing Youth Innovation for Economic Empowerment and Job Creation Towards Malawi 2063. It serves as a rallying call for young people to recognize their potential, unleash their creativity, and utilize their talents and ideas to build a brighter future for themselves and their communities.

Temwah told the Malawi News Agency (Mana) that her passion for youth empowerment was the main driving force behind creating the song.

“The inspiration is coming from my passion for youth empowerment. Many young people are struggling to earn a living, so this song is meant to encourage them that they can grow and thrive by starting businesses without feeling stuck.

“They can make a difference by changing their mindset, not just looking forward to being employed. The key message is that young people should be wealth creators, and all we need is a mindset shift that reflects Malawi 2063,” Temwah explained.

She also encouraged young people to persevere despite challenges, emphasizing that life must go on.

On her part, Theresa Phondo said the song was created to celebrate the capabilities of youth in building Malawi.

“I sang this song with Temwah in line with the National Youth Councils mandate to empower youth to rise up. We are celebrating youth creativity and hustle, and we look forward to a brighter Malawi by 2063. We are encouraging young people to fully harness and embrace their talents, ideas, and innovations so they can create economic opportunities, generate jobs, and transform communities,” Phondo added.

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has ended its operations and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has hailed the move as a new analysis found that its demolition could contribute to 14 million deaths in the next five years, CNN reports.

“This era of government-sanctioned inefficiency has officially come to an end. Under the Trump Administration, we will finally have a foreign funding mission in America that prioritizes our national interests.

"As of July 1st, USAID will officially cease to implement foreign assistance. Foreign assistance programs that align with administration policies—and which advance American interests—will be administered by the State Department....,” Rubio said in a post on Substack.

The rapid destruction of USAID, led by the Elon-Musk backed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has seen thousands of foreign assistance programs slashed, including many focused on lifesaving work.

A study published Monday in The Lancet estimates that the USAID funding cuts could result in more than 14 million additional deaths by 2030. Nearly a third of those deaths – more than 4.5 million – are estimated to be among children younger than 5.

Bales of sugar looted as truck overturns in Nkhata Bay

A Load Master Flatliner 30-ton truck carrying approximately 1,600 bales of sugar, Monday overturned at Lwazi in Nkhata Bay along Nkhata Bay-Mzuzu M5 Road.

Following the accident community members around the area looted the cargo instead of helping the driver who survived injuries.

According to Nkhata Bay Police Traffic Officer, Jimmy Kanzangaza, the truck registration number BU7542 belonging to Illovo Sugar Company, was en route to Mzuzu from Dwangwa in Nkhotakota.

"The driver, Horriable Ngoma from Mbulumbuzi in Traditional Authority Mpama in Chiradzulu District, was trapped in the vehicle and sustained minor bruises.

“Despite the need to help the driver, members of the community rushed to the scene to steal bales of sugar,” said Kanzangaza.

He added that about 25 percent of the cargo which is roughly 400 bales had been recovered as people smashed the vehicle and fled with the rest of the bales, adding that efforts to recover the remaining stolen bales are under way.

Kanzangaza condemned the tendency of theft at road accident scenes warning that such behaviour endangers lives and undermines rescue efforts of survivors of such accidents.
