The Media Council of Malawi (MCM) has expressed grave concern over the systemic and escalating pattern of political control, abuse, and manipulation of media institutions by successive ruling parties.

According to the council, this practice has been most notably exemplified by the partisan conduct of the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).

MCM says the partisan conduct of MBC directly undermines the constitutional principles of media freedom, erodes public trust, and hinders Malawi’s democratic progress.

Malawi joins World in marking Disaster Risk Reduction Day

Malawi has joined the rest of the world in commemorating the 2025 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR), which is observed annually on October 13 to promote a culture of disaster preparedness and resilience.

The day aims to acknowledge progress made globally in preventing and reducing disaster risks and losses.

According to a press statement dated October 13 and signed by the Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs, this years theme, Fund Resilience, Not Disasters, underscores the urgent need to shift from reactive response measures to proactive investments in disaster risk reduction and resilience building.

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) is leading the commemorations in Malawi, calling on policymakers, the private sector, development and humanitarian actors, civil society, and academia to prioritize disaster risk reduction and resilience financing, reads part of the statement.

DoDMA has also emphasized the importance of risk-informed development planning, investment, and budgeting to reduce the impact of disasters.

By working together, Malawians can build a more resilient future and mitigate the effects of disasters, the statement adds.

The statement highlights that disaster risk reduction is a shared responsibility that demands collective action to protect lives, livelihoods, and the economy.

Court jails recidivist 15 months for possessing 7 protected live birds

Dalton Senior Resident Magistrate Court in Limbe convicted and sentenced a 43 year old man, Chikumbutso Mizati to 15 months imprisonment with hard labour after the court found him guilty of possessing protected Sun birds, contrary to Section 110(b) of National Parks and Wildlife (Amendment of 2017) Act.

State Prosecutor, Superintendent, James Kanyumbu told the court that on September 29, 2025, Parks and Wildlife officers apprehended the convict at Maselema Roundabout in Limbe where he was selling seven live birds kept in two different cages of sunbird species.

“He was apprehended selling three birds in one cage at a wholesale price of K7,000 whilst birds in the other cage were being sold at K5,000,” Kanyumbu added.

On his part, Mizati asked the court to be lenient with him, saying he was a married man, with wife and children that all depended on him.

The state objected his appeal for leniency and asked the court for stiffer punishment as convict is a recidivist having committed same crime in October 2023.

The state further said Mizati's actions endanger protected bird species and emphasised the importance of birds in the environment.

Senior Resident Magistrate, Ackia Mwanyongo of Dalton Senior Resident Magistrate Court concurred with the state and convicted and sentenced Mizati to 15-month jail term.

Mizati comes from Zammimba Village at Traditional Authority Nsamalas area in Balaka District.

‎ZIMBABWE YOUTH CAUGHT DIGGING UP FATHER’S GRAVE TO SMOKE HIS BONES

‎A young man in Zimbabwe has been arrested after he was caught digging up his father’s grave in an attempt to exhume the remains and allegedly smoke the bones.

‎According to Mangungundengu TV, the man claimed his late father owed him money before he died and he is believed to be addicted to drugs.

‎The bizarre act is linked to a disturbing trend known as bone smoking, where addicts crush human bones into powder and mix them with other substances to inhale or smoke.

‎The practice, reportedly on the rise in Zimbabwe, is also said to be common in parts of Mozambique.
