Information minister calls for responsible journalism ahead of polls
Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Moses Kunkuyu, has urged media practitioners to uphold professionalism, ethics, and integrity during the 2025 general elections slated for Tuesday.
In a press statement released Sunday, Kunkuyu said the media carries a national obligation to disseminate accurate, impartial, and credible information throughout the electoral period.
“The media holds public trust and, therefore, must ensure that all reports are verified, balanced, and devoid of sensationalism in order to safeguard peace, unity, and credibility of the electoral process,” said Kunkuyu.
Kunkuyu said responsible journalism is fundamental in strengthening democracy and in building confidence in the elections, adding that misinformation and inflammatory reporting could endanger national security and erode citizens’ trust in democratic process.
“Media practitioners must respect established codes of conduct, the Communications Act, and Electoral Commission guidelines, while ensuring equal coverage for all political parties and candidates without favour or discrimination,” Kunkuyu emphasised.
According to Kunkuyu, government remains committed to facilitating access to official information and supporting press freedom, while urging the media to be accountable and professional to maintain public trust and protect national stability.
Meanwhile, Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi Chapter Chairperson, Golden Matonga, welcomed the ministry’s call, stressing that credible, fair, and responsible reporting is essential to sustaining democracy and guaranteeing peaceful, transparent, and trustworthy elections in Malawi.
“The media has a sacred duty to inform citizens with accuracy, balance, and integrity, as its conduct directly influences public trust, unity, and the overall credibility of our democratic electoral process,” Matonga said.
