Owen Kalima has been playing guitar for almost 9 years. It's funny how he turned out to be a guitarist, he was actually a dancer back then in the holds of Charles Sinetre 's institution, a youth organisation.
As he was growing up, the institution laid a ground for volunteers to learn guitar and Owen was one of them. Unfortunately, his friends were actually laughing at him 😅. But amongst the ones who wanted to play the guitar he was the only one left.
"I was playing a man-made Tin guitar at home after the institution's sessions" he said.
Later, as he was practicing really hard, he ventured into his church's band where the resident guitarist was failing to show up. This took him to shows at places like "Mlambe" in Balaka, with the church band where he started getting exposed and people liking him, and other musicians started taking him into studios as a session player.
"After getting exposed, I joined Lambanie Dube 's band and we worked together for a while." He said. He gained more experience in playing in a live band's performance.
He later, got the opportunity to move from Balaka to Lilongwe, where he is now based. He joined the Assemblies of God Church Gilgal The College Church as guitarist. Where he gained more experience and skills playing together with experienced band players.
As though, in Lilongwe it is so hard to pe*****te the market, he managed to get the recognition from different artists who liked him and started working together in live performances as well as a studio session player.
He has performed with different artists such as PJ Powers - Thandeka , Lawi , Bucci Worldwide , Lucius Chiccio Banda , Janta , Dan Lu , Nicky Chakwera , Rudo Mkukupa Chakwera , Matt alegeo , Elijah Kamanga , M***a the voice, from South Africa, just to mention a few.
As Wendy Favour Harawa is putting up a gospel concert at BICC called "The blessing", Owen Kalima will be blessing us with his guitar in the Wendy's band.
