Member of Parliament for Mulanje South West and Minister of Foreign Affairs, George Chaponda, says one of the secrets behind his continued electoral success is maintaining close ties with the people in his constituency.
He said he strives to implement development projects and assist community members without considering their political affiliation or background.
Chaponda explained that remaining accessible to the people has helped him earn their trust and support over the years.
Commenting on the maize procurement controversy involving Zambia, he said he was surprised by the allegations and maintains that he committed no wrongdoing.
He added that he stepped down from his position as Minister of Agriculture to allow investigations to take place.
The minister said he has faced numerous political challenges since 2005 but has remained resilient with encouragement from leaders such as Bingu wa Mutharika and Peter Mutharika.
He described his relationship with the current President as positive and supportive of his government duties.
Looking ahead to the 2030 elections, Chaponda said his political future will depend on the will of the people, but he remains ready to continue serving if given another opportunity.
He identified corruption, foreign currency shortages, and political intolerance as key challenges hindering Malawi’s development despite its abundant natural resources, including minerals.
