Minister of Education, Science and Technology Bright Msaka says government will employ about 1,100 teachers before the end of the current school term to address teacher shortages.
Msaka said this in Lilongwe on Monday during a press conference commemorating World Teachers’ Day 2026, under the theme “Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing Its Status, and Shaping Our Future.”
According to Msaka, the recruitment is part of government’s commitment to strengthening the teaching workforce and ensuring schools have adequate, qualified and motivated teachers to support quality education.
“Government will employ about 1,100 teachers before the end of this term. We recognize that quality education depends on prepared, competent and motivated teachers,” said Msaka.
Msaka has, however, urged the nation to support teachers through initiatives including awards and other forms of appreciation, as well as practical interventions aimed at improving their working and living conditions.
“There is much that we can do collectively and individually to support and appreciate our teachers. We all owe part of who we are and what we have achieved to teachers,” the minister continued.
The Minister also said government is investing in teacher education, continuous professional development and professional standards, while plans are underway to establish the Teacher Council and introduce a Diploma in Primary Education for primary school teachers.
World Teachers’ Day 2026 marks 60 years since the 1966 adoption by ILO and UNESCO of international standards on the status of teachers, providing an opportunity to strengthen the profession and renew commitment towards achieving Malawi 2063.
