Women farmers in Bauchi State, Nigeria, are seeing major changes in their livelihoods after UN Women installed a modern rice milling machine in Dabarkda. What once required long journeys to nearby towns can now be done within the community, saving women valuable time and reducing transport and processing costs.

The machine mills, destones and polishes rice in one process, improving both quantity and quality. From 10 mudus of paddy, women now produce more than five mudus of clean, market-ready rice, which can fetch about ₦1,500 per mudu compared with around ₦1,000 for conventionally processed rice. The extra income is helping families pay for school needs, household expenses and savings.

Beyond the profits, the rice mill has become a centre for cooperation and community development. The women are already planning to invest in additional equipment and expand the facility into a broader economic hub. The story shows how access to the right technology can turn women's hard work into greater productivity, dignity and economic independence.

Uganda’s government is preparing new parole regulations that could allow eligible prisoners to serve part of their sentences outside prison under supervision, as authorities seek to address overcrowding.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja told Parliament that the regulations are currently before the First Parliamentary Counsel. Government is also expanding non-custodial options such as community service, while video-link systems in 21 prisons are helping reduce the need to transport inmates to court.

The measures come amid concerns over prolonged remand periods and congestion in prisons. Government is also constructing and expanding prison facilities, including plans for 37 new prison wards in the 2026/27 financial year.

AXIAN Group and the African Development Bank (AfDB) have launched a major initiative to support more than 34,000 women-led businesses across five African countries with improved access to digital finance, business support and entrepreneurship opportunities.

Supported through the AfDB’s AFAWA and We-Fi initiatives, the programme will use platforms such as Mixx and MVola to provide digital lending, financial literacy, digital skills and tailored financial services. A further 25,000 women will receive training to strengthen their businesses and participation in the digital economy.

With African women entrepreneurs facing a significant financing gap despite being among the world’s most active entrepreneurs, the initiative seeks to turn technology into greater economic opportunity—helping women access capital, formalise businesses, create jobs and grow sustainably.
