The African Development Bank Group and the Republic of Equatorial Guinea signed a €58.61 million financing agreement on 30 October 2025 in the city of Bata for implementation of the first phase of the Project to Strengthen Human Capital in Support of Economic and Social Inclusion (PARCH 1).

Léandre Bassolé, Director of the African Development Bank for Central Africa, and Pedro Abeso Obiang Eyang, Deputy Minister for Finance and Budget and Alternate Governor of the Bank for Equatorial Guinea, signed the agreement, which marks the Bank's first investment in the country's human development sectors for 10 years.

The PARCH project aims to improve the quality and availability of training to increase access to employment for young women and men in Equatorial Guinea, helping the private sector to lead economic growth in the country.

The first phase of the project includes training for nearly 2,000 young people, of whom 45% are women, and the creation of 4,500 jobs, the establishment of 500 businesses run by young people and women, and the construction of two polytechnic institutes in the provincial cities of Mongomo and Luba that meet international standards and climate sustainability criteria. The project will also mobilise the private sector through internship opportunities for trained young people, the creation of incubators, and funds to support entrepreneurship.

The latest analysis of food insecurity and malnutrition in Sudan shows stark contrasts along conflict lines, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF warned today. In areas where violence has subsided – allowing humanitarian access and market recovery – food security has begun to improve. But in conflict-hit locations that have been largely cut off from humanitarian assistance or under siege, famine has now taken hold.

The agencies call for an end to hostilities and safe, unimpeded and sustained humanitarian access, which is urgently needed to prevent further loss of life and protect livelihoods.

The latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Special Snapshot confirms that by September 2025, acute food insecurity had slightly improved with an estimated 21.2 million – 45 percent of the population – facing high levels of acute food insecurity (IPC3+). An estimated 3.4 million people are no longer facing crisis levels of hunger (IPC3+) compared to the previous analysis (December 2024 to May 2025).

These improvements follow a gradual stabilisation since May 2025 in Khartoum, Al Jazirah and Sennar states, where conflict has eased. Families are returning home, markets are reopening, and there is more consistent access for commercial and humanitarian supplies. But these gains are limited; the wider crisis has shattered the economy and vital services, and much of the infrastructure people rely on has been damaged or destroyed.

Good conditions for agriculture are also expected after the harvest and into 2026, with crisis levels of hunger improving to19.3 million (October 2025 to January 2026).

Mukuru , a leading next-generation financial services platform, has partnered with AI-powered banking technology provider JUMO to launch ‘ Fast Loan’, a scalable, mobile-first credit solution designed to address a critical gap in South Africa’s financial ecosystem.

According to TransUnion , 16.8 million people in South Africa remain outside the formal credit system. Many earn irregular incomes, lack traditional credit histories, and are excluded from mainstream financial services.

With the launch of Fast Loan, the two African fintech leaders aim to close this gap by offering fair, transparent, and responsible access to short-term credit by combining Mukuru’s trusted customer relationships and network with JUMO’s AI-driven credit infrastructure.

JUMO’s banking as a service infrastructure will power Fast Loan. JUMO provides plug-and-play infrastructure behind a new generation of data orientated financial products. Their solutions include SME and retail banking software infrastructure provided to banks.

Mukuru customers can apply via WhatsApp, with instant disbursements to their Mukuru Card. Loan amounts range from R100 to R8,000, repayable over 30 days, and funds can be used immediately across all digital channels such as POS or online ecommerce with the card, or on any of the many value-added services offered by Mukuru. They can also be withdrawn as cash at any ATM or at over 11,000 of Mukuru’s retail partner points, including Spar, Pick ’n Pay, Boxer, and Shoprite.

04/11/2025

The European Union (EU) takes note of the proclamation by the Independent National Electoral Commission of Tanzania and the Zanzibar Electoral Commission of the results of the presidential elections held on 29 October 2025.

The EU is very concerned with the events that occurred throughout the Election Day and that are still ongoing, including violence, the internet shutdown as well as reports of irregularities in the election process in some places. Reliable reports of large number of fatalities and significant injuries are of extreme concern. The EU urges authorities to exercise maximum restraint to preserve human lives.

The lack of level playing field in the run up to the elections was marked by reports of abductions and disappearances and violence limiting the civic and democratic space. The EU calls for the release of all detained politicians and for a transparent and fair trial of those arrested on a sound legal basis and for swift and thorough investigations into all reported incidents of abductions, disappearances and violence.

The EU values its long-standing partnership with Tanzania in line with the joint commitments entered into under the EU-OACPS “Samoa” Agreement, in particular on strategic priorities. The EU encourages the Government of Tanzania to continue its efforts towards the implementation of a fully-fledged multi-party system, and to engage in an open and inclusive dialogue with all stakeholders, in particular opposition parties and civil society for reconciliation.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, through the Regional Trade Facilitation Committee (RTFC), held the second meeting of the Sub-Committee on Women in Trade virtually on the 21st and 22nd of October 2025. The meeting aimed to review the implementation of the Subcommittee’s three-year work plan and strengthen women’s participation in cross-border trade in the West African region.

In her opening remarks, the Honourable Dr Isata Mahoi, Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs of the Republic of Sierra Leone, highlighted the essential role of women, whether formal or informal traders, in West African economies. She nevertheless pointed out that they continue to face systemic barriers such as limited access to finance, markets and decision-making. The Minister commended ECOWAS for its Gender and Trade Action Plan, stressing the need to go beyond infrastructure to include capacity building, digital inclusion and targeted support for women-led businesses.
