By Cyrus Bengo

A 32-year-old witch doctor, Thomson Benson, has been taken into custody by authorities in Lilongwe. The arrest comes after allegations surfaced that Benson has been engaging in sexual in*******se with his 15-year-old stepdaughter.

According to reports the Teamplus Television has in possession, the abuse began in 2023 where Benson would take advantage of his wife's absence during farming trips to exploit the young victim. The perpetrator's actions went undetected for an extended period, until the victim discovered she was pregnant in February 2025.

Upon learning of the pregnancy, the toddler mustered the courage to reveal the horrific ordeal to her mother. The mother promptly reported the abuse to the authorities, leading to Benson's arrest.

Benson, a resident of Khoswe Village, Traditional Authority Kalolo in Lilongwe District, will face charges under Section 138 of the Penal Code. The authorities have confirmed that Benson will appear in court once the necessary paperwork is completed.

LILONGWE DESCENDS INTO CHAOS AS MYSTERIOUS STONE THROWERS WREAK HAVOC.

03 March 2025

By Cyrus Bengo

In a bizarre incident that has left authorities baffled, a group of individuals, dubbed the "Stone throwers," brought the city of Lilongwe to a standstill . The mysterious gang, blocked roads, demanded money from motorists, and pelted moving vehicles with stones, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as absolute pandemonium, with cars screeching to a halt and pedestrians running for cover as the Stone throwers went on the rampage.

"It was like something out of a movie," said one witness on the phone, who wished to remain anonymous. "I was driving to work when suddenly, these figures appeared out of nowhere, throwing stones and causing chaos. I had to swerve to avoid them!"

Lilongwe police publicist Hestings Chigalu said so far they are keeping in custody 15 of them .

The Stone throwers' motives remain unclear, but sources suggest that they may have been inspired by a group of shop workers who were protesting against low wages earlier in the day.

As the situation spiralled out of control, police were forced to intervene, dispersing the crowd and arresting the Stone throwers. But the question on everyone's lips remains: who were these marauders, and what drove them to wreak havoc on the city?

THERE IS NEED OF VASTLY IMPROVED COMMUNICATION BETWEEN GOVERNMENT AND THE PUBLIC

If one considers the more obvious indices of the rising costs of food, energy and transportation; alongside huge unemployment figures in the country, the increasing immiseration of the people, and an environment still basically unfriendly to businesses – leading to the continuous shut down of small and medium scale enterprises, then it would be easy to assume that in its first term the Chakwera government has performed way below the bar it set for itself in seeking office.

Also, in contemplating an economy in a tailspin, rapidly contracting and inspiring further grim forecasts on the continued decline of national productivity, and the ongoing direct march towards a recession, it would equally not be difficult to declare the first term of the Chakwera government as having run contrary to the promise of change it committed to delivering in its manifesto and at the inception of the regime.

There is need for better policy coherence, and vastly improved communication between government and the public, to make the administration truly people-oriented and responsive.

The current state of our nation is a stark reminder of the importance of effective communication between the government and the public. Rising costs of food, energy, and transportation, coupled with high unemployment rates and an unfavorable business environment, paint a bleak picture of the Chakwera government's performance in its first term.

In order to restore public trust and confidence, the government must prioritize communication. This can be achieved by streamlining communications, making them audience-focused, and having agile communications teams. The government must also establish digital and open communication channels, focus on dialogue and engagement, utilize storytelling, and adopt a results-based approach.

By taking these steps, the government can improve its communication with the public, increase transparency, and build trust. It is only through effective communication that the government can hope to address the pressing issues facing our nation and deliver on its promises.

The time for improved communication is now. The government must seize this opportunity to reconnect with the public and work towards a brighter future for all.

Pop star Shakira has been hospitalised in Peru with a stomach issue, forcing her to cancel her Sunday show in the Andean country.

The Colombian singer disclosed this via social media on Sunday. “I’m sorry to let you all know that last night I had to go to the emergency room for an abdominal issue and I’m currently hospitalised. The doctors taking care of me have let me know that I’m not well enough to perform tonight,” she wrote.

The singer was said to have arrived in Lima on Saturday, her first stop to perform there in more than a decade. Videos posted to her account showed hundreds of fans greeting her at the airport.

“I hope to be better by tomorrow and that they release me from hospital as soon as possible to be able to put on the show that I’ve prepared for you all,” Shakira said in her post.

Shakira, known in the Spanish-speaking world for hits such as La Tortura with Spaniard Alejandro Sanz, or her 2023 diss track against ex-partner Gerard Piqué, produced by Argentine DJ Bizarrap, is credited as a forerunner for Latin artists crossing over into the English-speaking market.

Her most popular song to date is Hips Don’t Lie, with Wyclef Jean, featuring her now-hallmark gyrating dance moves. It was gathered that the singer’s next show in Lima is slated for Monday. She kicked off her tour last week in Brazil.

REBELS ATTACK DR CONGO ARMY ENDING LULL IN FIGHTING

12 February 2024

By BBC

The M23 rebels have attacked Congolese government forces in the South Kivu province, breaking a two-day lull in fighting.

Heavy shelling began on Tuesday morning, three days after a summit of East and Southern African leaders called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.

The rebels have seized vast swathes of land in the eastern DR Congo, including the major city of Goma.

They are now pushing towards Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu - another key city in the region.

Around 2,900 people have been killed since early January as a result of the hostilities, the latest UN figures suggest.

Approximately 700,000 others are estimated to have been forced from their homes and thousands more injured.

Tuesday's fighting erupted near Ihusi, a locality around 70km (43 miles) from Bukavu and 40km from the South Kivu's airport, security sources told news agency AFP.

A spokesperson for the Congo River Alliance (known by its French acronym AFC), an alliance of rebel groups including the M23, suggested its fighters could take their battle to Bukavu.

Lawrence Kanyuka responded to the arrests by the Congolese authorities of 84 army personnel for crimes such as killing civilians near Bukavu, saying: "If these crimes persist, we will take full responsibility to eradicate the threat at its source and protect our people".

Meanwhile, reports say that hundreds and thousands of refugees, who have fled the ongoing fighting, were being forced to return home by the M23.

The M23 has denied this allegation, but French broadcaster RFI reported that several large camps for displaced people have been dismantled and their inhabitants made to trek back to their villages in conflict zones.

Ocha, the UN's humanitarian agency, said the M23 had given displaced people in Goma 72 hours to return to home.

Mr Kanyuka said such reports were "propaganda" and that displaced people were returning voluntarily. The M23 "does not compel anyone to return without firm security guarantees", he said.

The M23, which is made up of ethnic Tutsis, say they are fighting for minority rights, while DR Congo's government says the rebels are seeking control of the eastern region's vast mineral wealth.

DR Congo and the UN accused Rwanda's Tutsi-dominated government of backing the M23 - an allegation which Kigali has persistently denied.

But recently, the official response has shifted, with government spokespeople stating that fighting near its border is a security threat.

TANZANIA CONFIRMS THE OUTBREAK OF MARBURG VIRUS

20th January 2025

By Cyrus Bengo

Tanzania government has confirmed the outbreak of Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) in the Northwestern Kagera region, following the identification of one positive case after laboratory analysis of suspected cases.

This was announced on Monday by Tanzania’s President Samia Hassan during a press briefing in the country’s capital, Dodoma, alongside the Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Tedros Ghebreyesus.

WHO recently issued an alert on a suspected outbreak of Marburg disease in the Kagera region, with eight reported deaths out of nine cases.

The global health body raised concerns about cross-border transmission due to the proximity of the Kagera region to international borders with Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to the press release on the website of the WHO Africa Region, laboratory tests confirmed one patient was infected with the Marburg virus, while other suspected patients tested negative.

Mrs Hassan expressed confidence in the country’s ability to contain the outbreak, citing past successes in managing similar health crises.

“Laboratory tests conducted at Kabaile Mobile Laboratory in Kagera and later confirmed in Dar es Salaam identified one patient as being infected with the Marburg virus. Fortunately, the remaining suspected patients tested negative,” the president said.

“We have demonstrated in the past our ability to contain a similar outbreak and are determined to do the same this time around.”

She noted that a total of 25 suspected cases have been reported as of 20 January, all of whom have tested negative and are currently under close follow-up. The cases have been reported in Biharamulo district in Kagera.

WHO is supporting Tanzanian health authorities to enhance key outbreak control measures including disease surveillance, testing, treatment, infection prevention and control, and case management.

Mr Ghebreyesus said the WHO is committed to supporting the government of Tanzania to bring the outbreak under control as soon as possible, and to build a healthier, safer, fairer future for all the people of Tanzania.

He said this is a time for collaboration, and commitment, to protect the health of all people in Tanzania, and the region, from the risks posed by this disease.

Also, WHO Regional Director for Africa, Matshidiso Moeti emphasised the importance of the president’s declaration and the government’s measures in tackling the Marburg virus disease outbreak.

Ms Moeti said the priority is to support the government to rapidly scale up measures to effectively respond to this outbreak and safeguard the health of the population.

BIEBER HINTS ON MUSICAL COMEBACK

16 January 2025

Entertainment News

The 30-year-old American singer Justin Bieber is poised to release new music after he released an album in nearly four years, Justice in March 2021.

Now that Bieber is a father, he welcomed his first son with wife Hailey in late August, the singer appears poised to go back to work.

While he hasn't announced anything officially, Bieber shared a new video on his Intagram story Wednesday that featured what could be a snippet of new music.

The video was taken from the back of Bieber's car as he drove with his wife Hailey in the front seat as they were seen holding hands as he drove.

The singer was wearing a black hoodie and he was seen bopping his head to the music in the car's rear view mirror.

Just days after a report claimed that Justin Bieber is eyeing a musical comeback because he needs the money a mysterious Instagram story post may lend some credence to it.

The video also had a film projector emoji and a hand with a pen writing emoji, though the singer didn't provide any other details.

Still, there is no official confirmation that Bieber is getting back in the recording booth anytime soon.

The report from Puck claimed that Bieber 'needs money and wants to work,' adding that he still owes AEG 'a ton for his canceled tour' back in March 2023.

The news also comes as it was recently revealed that Bieber has unfollowed his earliest mentors - former manager Scooter Braun and Usher - on Instagram.

Bieber is now being represented by lawyer Michael Rhodes, who has past represented celebrities such as Madonna and members of the Kardashian family.

Bieber's financial issues come two years after he sold rights to his catalog for $200 million in 2023, in a deal the Los Angeles Times reported Rhodes was integral in.

Bieber's rumored return to the musical world comes more than four months after musical artist Mk.gee, 28, told The New York Times that he had written and recorded tracks with Bieber.

The video also had a timer at the bottom, with the sample including lyrics about 'shaking off the hate.

CHAPO SWORN IN AS PRESIDENT ELECT

15th January 2025

By Cyrus Bengo

Long-ruling Frelimo party candidate Daniel Chapo has been sworn in as president of Mozambique on Wednesday at a sparsely attended ceremony after months of protests against his disputed election victory.

More than 300 people have been killed in clashes with security forces since 9 October vote, which the opposition says Frelimo won through vote-rigging and Western observers say was not free and fair.

The party denies accusations of electoral fraud, it has ruled Mozambique since the end of the war against Portuguese colonial rule in 1975, clinging on throughout a 15-year civil war that killed a million people before a 1992 truce.

Speaking at the ceremony to a group of about 1 500 supporters from a stage in the capital Maputo, Chapo said that social and political stability would be his government’s top priority.

He also promised to shrink the size of the government by reducing the number of ministries, tackle youth unemployment and prioritise health and education.

The city center was largely deserted with a heavy police and army presence.

Malawi was represented by the vice president and former United Transformation Movement (UTM) president Dr Macheal Utsi.

Meanwhile the leader of opposition Venancio Mondlane, who official results say came second to Chapo in the presidential election, returned from self-imposed exile last week and has urged his supporters to continue demonstrating.

The post-election protests amount to the largest against Frelimo in Mozambique’s history and have affected foreign businesses operating in the resource-rich southern African country of 35 million people.

They have also disrupted cross-border trade Malawi inclusive and forced some citizens to flee to neighbouring countries.

MONDLANE RETURNS HOME

09 January 2025

By Cyrus Bengo

Venâncio Mondlane, Mozambique opposition leader has returned home after fleeing the country over post-election safety fears

The leader returned on Thursday, after fleeing for days following a hotly contested October election that sparked demonstrations in which scores of protesters have been killed.

Mondlane says the 9 October poll was rigged and he called on his supporters to take to the streets across the nation of 35 million.

A heavy riot police presence was felt in the areas on Thursday surrounding capital Maputo’s international airport where thousands gathered to welcome Mondlane.

A witness said tear gas was fired on crowds in the area and snipers were positioned on buildings around the air base.

Protests have continued, sporadically, for more than two months, and Mondlane’s return could add fuel to the fire.

Civil society monitoring group Plataforma Decide said at least 278 people had died in the protests since mid-October, when the electoral commission announced the results extending the ruling Frelimo party’s half-century in power.

Frelimo has ruled Mozambique since the end of the war against Portuguese colonial rule in 1975, clinging on throughout a 15-year civil war that killed a million people before a 1992 truce.

Last year’s unrest hurt businesses and disrupted border access with neighbouring South Africa, while some people have fled in Malawi and Eswatini amid the violence.

Mozambique’s top court in December confirmed Frelimo’s election victory – despite a number of reports from observers that it was not free and fair – triggering a fresh round of protests.

Newly elected President Daniel Chapo is to be sworn in next week, another potential flashpoint in Mozambique’s political crisis.

Chapo and Frelimo deny accusations of electoral fraud.
