Concerned Civil Society Organisations have questioned reported plans by the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Anti-Corruption Bureau to withdraw corruption-related charges against convicted Chinese wildlife trafficker Lin Yun Hua.

Addressing a news conference in Lilongwe, the organisations said such a move would undermine Malawi's progress in the fight against illegal wildlife crime and could weaken public confidence in the justice system.

Speaking on behalf of the grouping, Indigenous Conservation of Nature representative Zilanie Gondwe and Centre for Environmental Policy and Advocacy representative Alfred Kambwiri questioned what they described as a possible conflict of interest involving the DPP, noting that he previously formed part of Lin Yun Hua's legal team.

Lin Yun Hua was sentenced to 14 years' imprisonment in 2021 after being convicted of offences involving rhino horns and money laundering. In 2025, he was granted a presidential pardon after serving four years but was later re-arrested over allegations that he bribed prison officials and sought to secure a lighter sentence during his original trial.

The 12 civil society organisations are demanding a clear, evidence-based explanation for any decision to discontinue the corruption-related charges, saying transparency and accountability are essential to maintaining public trust in the justice system.

The organisations have also called on both the Director of Public Prosecutions Fostino Mayere and the Anti-Corruption Bureau Director genera general Gabriel Chembezi, to publicly explain the reported plans to withdraw the charges and say they will seek intervention from the Malawi Law Society and other relevant authorities if no satisfactory clarification is provided within 14 days.

When contacted, ACB public relations officer, Jacqueline Ngongonda asked for more time before commenting on the matter.

Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has returned to Mogadishu after being excluded from the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a decision by US immigration authorities.

Artan, named Africa’s Best Male Referee in 2025, was set to become the first Somali official to referee a World Cup match.

FIFA confirmed he will not officiate at the tournament, saying entry decisions are made by host governments.

Speaking after his return, Artan said he was not upset by the setback and would continue to work hard and remain focused on his career.

The Taekwondo Association of Malawi has announced the appointment of six additional officials to bolster administration, technical development, and promotion of the sport nationwide.

The Executive Board said the appointments take effect immediately, according to a press release signed by TAM President Major Louis Msokwa on 8 June 2026.

The statement says Andrew Soole has been named National Technical Director. His duties include coordinating athlete development, coaching, officiating standards, technical seminars, gradings, competitions, and ensuring compliance with Taekwondo rules and regulations.

Two Assistant Technical Directors were also appointed to support regional coordination. Valerie Ntula will serve for the Southern Region while Victor Msonga takes the Central Region.

The association also filled key administrative and communications roles where Vester Banda was appointed Safeguarding Officer, Chikambotho Banda comes in as Marketing Director to drive visibility and growth through sponsorship, branding, partnerships, and event marketing, and Mike Lyson Zgambo will serve as Media Officer.

Msokwa urged all heads of dojangs and TAM members to extend cooperation to the new officials as they carry out their mandates.

He said the appointments are aimed at improving technical delivery, safeguarding, and public visibility of Taekwondo in Malawi.
