The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has issued fresh guidance on the age requirements for prospective candidates seeking to benefit from subsidised nomination fees under the Youth Category in the upcoming Parliamentary and Local Government By-Elections scheduled for June 30, 2026.

According to a statement signed by Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi, candidates must be under 35 years old on the date of presenting their nomination papers, June 9, 2026, to qualify for the subsidy.

MEC says only individuals born on or after June 10, 1991are eligible to pay the reduced nomination fees under the Youth Category.

The subsidised fees have been set at K1,250,000 for Parliamentary candidates and K100,000 for Local Government candidates.

The Commission has urged prospective candidates and constituency returning officers to take note of the guidelines to avoid misunderstandings during the nomination process.
