Mammoth crowds gathered at both Mangochi turn off in Balaka and Mangochi Boma this afternoon, to welcome His Excellency, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, as he made his way to the Lakeshore District on Tuesday afternoon.

The Malawi leader will be in Mangochi for a number of days where he is expected fulfil a number of public engagements in the Eastern Region.

In his remarks to the jubilant at both stopovers, President Chakwera assured the gathering that he will be in the Eastern Region for a number of days, to establish first hand, the reasons behind socio-economic challenges affecting people in the area.

He is expected to inspect a number of key development projects along the Eastern belt among other official engagements.

Meanwhile President Chakwera has urged residents of the area to live in harmony and support each other despite differences in religious beliefs or culture.

The Malawi leader praised the people for staying strong in the face of various challenges that have rocked Malawi.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Regional Governor for the Eastern Region Foster Mtandama assured the President that the Eastern Region is behind the President Chakwera led administration.

The Malawi National Football team (Flames) will know their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations opponents today with the draw expected to take place in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Patrick Mabedi side are in pot three alongside Kenya, Mauritania, Congo, Tanzania, Guinea Bissau, Libya, Comoros, Togo, Sudan, Sierra Leone and Central African Republic.

Top ranked teams are in pot one whereas lowly ranked teams have been put in pot four.

During the draw, 48 teams will be grouped into four pots of 12 as per the latest FIFA Ranking released on June 20th, 2024.

The qualifying matches will be played over the FIFA international windows of September, October and November, this year.

I stay in Mzuzu, on Thursday I was driving to Lilongwe for the first time since January this year.
All this while I thought the M1 road project had stalled based on the social media reports which goes like "Chakwera palibe chimene akuchita"...

To my surprise, I found heavy machinery busy working right from the Jenda-Mzimba stretch all the way to Lumbadzi.

What drew my attention more was the kind of work being done between Mponela and Lumbadzi... The kind of road being constructed is something I have never seen in this democratic era.

Yes munthu sangakome zonse, koma pankhani ya misewu, I think Dr. Chakwera is indeed a game changer...

When I arrived in Lilongwe, I vividly saw the Capital City being reconstructed. When those beautiful roads in the City gets to completion, Malawi will now have a Capital City.

Am NOT a politician, but I think it's good to give credit where it is due... And I think it's better for us to be feeding others true and correct information. When you hate someone with passion, please don't bother to find a duster to rub off whatsoever he or she is doing otherwise one day you will become an energy of those who see things rightly.

MACRA demands K19 million from MultiChoice

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has demanded Multichoice Malawi to pay 19 million kwacha in unpaid licence fees and to provide exact date when it will shut down DStv services in Malawi.

This is contained in a letter dated 10 August which MACRA has written MultiChoice.

MACRA executive director Daud Suleman says MultiChoice should fulfill its licence obligations before completing DStv withdrawal.

According to Suleman, the South African company owes MACRA K19 million which should be paid to the regulatory authority in 30 days.

Suleman also wants MultiChoice to put in place measures that will assist customers who would have paid subscription fees beyond the shutdown date as well as to provide compensation to consumers for proprietary DStv equipment that will become obsolete after the shutdown.

He has also advised MultiChoice to ensure that DStv signals are not using Malawi spectrum after the shutdown day.

“You are further advised that once the voluntary revocation is completed, any broadcasting without an applicable license issued by the Authority is an offence under Section 187 of the Communications Act and that the Authority will not hesitate to take appropriate action against you in line with the Act,” reads part.

MultiChoice Africa Holdings withdrew DStv services in Malawi last week after MACRA blocked new DStv tariffs.

MACRA obtained an injunction against the decision to increase the tariffs.

Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu said this week that Government will intervene so that MultiChoice continues providing DStv services in Malawi.
