Karonga District Council has on Monday, 21 July 2025, officially handed over newly constructed staff house at Wiliro Police Unit valued at K118 million.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Officer-in-Charge for Karonga Police Station, Kelvin Mulezo, expressed gratitude to the council for the support and commitment shown towards strengthening law enforcement in rural communities.

“We thank the Karonga District Council for recognising the need to improve police infrastructure in areas like Wiliro. With this staff house now complete, we are ready to deploy more officers to this unit to ensure the safety and security of people in the surrounding villages.” said Mulezo.

Group Village Headman Mwenechilanga also welcomed the development, stating that the presence of more police officers in the area will help curb crime and improve safety among community members.

Ministry of Health, with financial support from Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is training 100 community health workers from high-risk districts in health pandemic preparedness and response.

Speaking at the opening session in Lilongwe, Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandondo Chiponda, said training health workers in community-based surveillance, risk communication and community engagement can help in improving healthcare delivery.

Director of Africa CDC in Southern Africa, L*l Reik, said community health workers are very crucial in tackling outbreaks, including cholera, at the grassroots level, hence the need to train them properly.

The four-day training has brought together Health Surveillance Assistants, nurses, midwives and environmental health assistants.

A month-long free therapy campaign has revealed that many Malawian men are silently battling emotional distress, with relationship problems topping the list.

The free sessions were carried out by Sorry I’m Not Sorry, a youth-led mental health advocacy group, from June 10 to July 10, targeting men both locally and in the diaspora.

Out of 142 participants, 39% sought help for relationship and marital issues, often linked to financial stress and emotional neglect.

The group's National Coordinator, Joseph Daniel Sukali, said many men opened up for the first time, highlighting a deep need for safe, judgment-free support.

Mental health advocate, Levson Mundie Thomas, urged society to break the stigma around men’s mental health and make support services more accessible.

Kasungu Police Station has registered a 17 percent decrease in crime rate from January to June 2025 as compared to the same period last year, where 3 percent decrease was recorded.

According to the station’s bi-annual report, cases such as robbery, burglary and theft, indecent assault and sexual in*******se with a minor have decreased while incidents of su***de and motorcycle theft continue to rise in the district.

The station's deputy spokesperson, Miracle Hauli, told MBC Digital that the reduction has been achieved through various initiatives by the station and stakeholders.

She said among others, the station has been conducting sweeping and raid operations, community policing sensitisation meetings with community members on crime prevention and providing rapid response to emergency calls.

Hauli however expressed concern over the increase in road accidents in the district, saying a 7.8 percent increase has been registered from January to June, 2025 as compared to the same period last year where only 4 percent was registered.

According to Hauli, the station is enhancing law enforcement, optimising traffic management strategies and providing support services in order to reduce crimes that are still on the rise in the district.

Aspiring candidate for Karonga Lufilya Constituency, Atusaye Nyondo, says the recent constituency demarcation by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) will enhance development in various parts of the country.

Nyondo noted that large constituencies often struggle to implement development projects through different funding windows, and the demarcations will help address that challenge.

He also highlighted the need to promote irrigation farming in response to the effects of climate change.
