The Athletics Malawi (AM) says nurturing local talents is important for the development of athletics in the country.

Vice President and Technical Director of Athletics Malawi Dennis Phiri said this on Tuesday in Balaka during the Balaka Run competition organized by Andiamo Trust.

District Sports Officer for Balaka Moses Chimbetete hailed Andiamo Trust for contributing to the development of athletes in the district the past 20 years it has organizing the sport in the district.

Deputy Director of Andiamo Trust Alessandro Marchetti said apart from being a sporting event, the activity also created an opportunity to sensitize both the youths and adults on gender based violence and children’s rights.

Schools and clubs within and outside Balaka some from as far as Lilongwe participated the competition and the winning schools trophies, the winning students from received school bags and other school materials while those from clubs cash prizes.

With support from Malawi National Council of Sports, we staged a National Cross Country Championship in Kasungu at Kamuzu Academy Golf Course.

Chikondi Mwanyali and Asimenye Simwaka won the senior challenge while Jonathan Chisale and Tadala Nazombe won the junior category.

All is set for the 2025 National Cross-Country Championship in Kasungu.

The Athletics Malawi President said that the event aims to promote athletics nationwide and encourage healthy lifestyles, particularly among the youth.

The event is expected to serve as a key platform for talent identification, with the goal of nurturing future national champions.

“All the athletics are ready, and expect a new Malawi with champions that can represent Malawi internationally,” he said.

With support from the Malawi National Council of Sports, the 2025 National Cross-Country Championship, is scheduled to take place today on 15 February 2025 at the Kamuzu Academy Golf Course in Kasungu District.

We have clocked 1 year in Athletics Office. A lot of lessons and mixed experiences.
We have laid a promising foundation to better athletics in the country.
Apart from usual competitions, we have managed to activate Kids athletics programme, establish a secretariat and most of all to conduct (a non - elective) Annual General Meeting (after a long time) on 30th December 2024 at Kamuzu Institute of Sports in Lilongwe.
It was an exciting moment to chair the first AGM of my tenure as President of Athletics Malawi.
I would like to extend my gratitude to all delegates for positive contributions that will help to sharp the future of Athletics Malawi .

We are taking a normal pace, we believe each year we will be recording some milestones.
