A forest officer who sold 58 pine trees worth K105 million in Dedza Forest Reserve has started serving his five-year prison sentence after failing to pay a K2.5 million fine slapped on him by the Lilongwe Principal Resident Magistrate Court.
Andrew Mbughi, aged 36, was convicted on Friday of abuse of office and destroying forest produce from a forest reserve without license.
State prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent, Saddrey Sambo of the Central West Region Police told the court that on June 2, 2023 a patrol team between Lilongwe based forestry officials and Dedza Police Station detectives hit Dedza Mountain after a tip went rife about illegal cutting down of trees.
At Mgonda area, within the reserve, they found 86 felled trees awaiting transportation and a security guard immediately named their superior Mbughi to be behind the shady deal.
In his trial, the accused pleaded not guilty to the two charges laid against him, prompting the State to parade five witnesses.
The State prayed to the court to impose a stiffer punishment on Mbughi, saying he was supposed to protect the mountain, not plundering its resources.
In his mitigation, he begged for leniency saying he has a wife and a child who relies on him for school fees.
Passing sentence, Principal Resident Magistrate Rodrick Michongwe condemned Mbughi for being at the forefront destroying trees for economic gain; saying he abused his powers, breaching his employer’s (government) trust at the same time; hence the need to isolate him from society to deter potential offenders.
Mbughi comes from Wilson Msukwa Village Traditional Authority Mwenemisuku in Chitipa District.
