MZIMBA YOUTH ORGANIZATION BEMOAN LACK OF MATHEMATICS TEACHER AT MBWILIWIZA CDSS

Students at Mbwiliwiza secondary school in Mzimba District are not learning mathematics due to inadequate teachers at the school.

This came to light after Mzimba Youth Organization conducted education monitoring in different primary and secondary schools in the district and found out that many schools, especially those in rural areas, are short on teachers and students are not learning other subjects.

Mbwiliwiza CDSS is one of the schools where Mathematics is not taught, and worse still, the school has only four teachers to handle form one up to four classes.

Medison Banda and Joyce Chirwa who are Form Four students at the school expressed desperation as to how they will approach their MSCE examinations, particularly Mathematics which they have not learned throughout the three terms.

Deputy head teacher at the school, Chimwemwe Simwaka also confirmed the sad development and said each teacher at the school teaches 4 periods every day. Simwaka says the school needs at least 12 teachers to effectively impart knowledge to the students.

When Mzimba Youth Organization presented the matter to the Director of Education for M’mbelwa District Council Fides Msowoya, they were referred to the office of Education Division Manager.

The organization's executive director Moses Nkhana has requested the central government to hand over the responsibility of monitoring secondary schools to district councils.

Education Division Manager for the North, Jennings Matalabanda Kayira admitted that some secondary schools in the region have inadequate teachers and has promised to send teachers to the schools.

Advocates of equity in education have established that many schools in rural areas have very few teachers – a development that is compromising education standards in the areas – yet all students in the country write the same examinations and face the same assessment standards.
