Zomba Police has confirmed the death of a 22-year-old fourth-year student at the University of Malawi (UNIMA), Abelcassius Mkandawire, by su***de.

Mkandawire, who was studying Economics, is said to have been found hanging in his Chikanda rented house on Sunday 30 November, 2025.

Police spokesperson for Zomba, Patricia Sipiliano, who confirmed the incident and the deceased's identity, said on Sunday the late Mkandawire told his roommate that he needs time for prayers in the afternoon to conduct prayers.

However, when the room mate returned around 4 pm, he discovered that Mkandawire has hanged himself.

Sipiliano said police visited the scene, took the body to Zomba Central hospital for a postmortem, whose results are yet to be disclosed.
