PUP LIVE INTERVIEW: HON. MIKE KWEKWETE SHARES HIS JOURNEY, POLITICAL EXPERIENCE AND VISION FOR MALAWI

The Peoples United Party (PUP) today hosted a live interview featuring Hon. Mike Kwekwete, Executive Member of the party and aspiring representative for Thyolo Thava Constituency.

During the interview, Hon. Kwekwete shared his educational background, political journey dating back to 2004, his experiences in different elections, and what attracted him to the Peoples United Party.

He also spoke about his personal life before delivering a message of unity to PUP supporters, urging members to love one another, work together and remain united for the party's success.

Second Vice President, Enoch Chihana, is this evening attending a funeral service at Lilongwe CCAP in honour of the late Kestina Nyirongo, mother to the Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jappie Mhango.

Late Nyirongo died on Wednesday in Lilongwe at the age of 86 after a long illness.

Her body is expected to be laid to rest in Rumphi District later.

The Malawi national women's football team has reached the final of the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in their maiden appearance after a 3-1 victory over Algeria.

The Scorchers delivered a historic performance to book their place in the final, with goals from Tabitha Chawinga, who scored a brace, and Temwa Chawinga sealing win.

The result means Malawi has become the first WAFCON debutant to reach the final since the inaugural tournament in 1998. Until now, no debutant had managed the feat.

The Scorchers will now wait to face either hosts Morocco or Cameroon in the final as they chase a first-ever WAFCON title.

As preliminary activities for tomorrow’s climax of the 2026 Umthetho Cultural Festival at Hora Heritage Centre intensify, the Malawi Police Service has used the gathering to step up awareness campaigns aimed at curbing the rising practice of mob justice.

Speaking today, Friday with at the foot of Hora Mountain in Mzimba, Inspector General Richard Chikoko Luhanga warned that taking the law into one’s own hands is a serious criminal offence.

He said the Northern Region has recorded 85 murder cases since January, 50 of them in Mzimba District.

Luhanga said police are leveraging the Umthetho Festival to reach large numbers of people and explain the dangers and legal consequences of mob justice.

Meanwhile, His Majesty Inkosi ya Makhosi M’mbelwa V has expressed dismay at the growing incidents of mob justice, and warned that chiefs who allow witchdoctors to carry out cleansing rituals in their areas risk losing their chieftaincy immediately.
