Non-governmental organisations in Mwanza have backed calls for financial assistance to be provided to prisoners upon their release, particularly to help them meet transport costs to return to their respective homes.

Martin Kadaona, Chairperson of the district’s NGO coordination body, says providing such assistance could help former inmates reintegrate into their communities. He believes the lack of transport money may force some released prisoners to engage in unlawful activities as they try to raise money for their journey home.

Kadaona has also warned that some former inmates may end up moving around the district without a clear destination, a situation he says could expose them to criminal activities.

He has therefore appealed to NGOs, faith-based organisations and other well-wishers to consider supporting the initiative, saying there is currently no organisation in Mwanza providing this kind of assistance.

The call follows an earlier appeal by Fani Master, the inmates’ leader at Mwanza Prison, who asked organisations and individuals to assist prisoners who are released with transport fares so they can safely return to their homes.

Police in Mangochi have arrested 29-year-old Jafali M'bwana for allegedly stabbing to death 23-year-old Sumaila Aubrey after finding him having sexual in*******se with his 38-year-old wife in their matrimonial home.

According to Mangochi Police Spokesperson, Amina Tepani Daudi, the incident happened on the night of July 25, 2026 at Stambuli Village, TA Chimwala, Mangochi District.

Daudi said the Investigations show that Aubrey was in a relationship with M'bwana’s wife and had gone to see her, thinking her husband was in Lilongwe. M'bwana returned home around midnight, forced his way into the house and found them red-handed.

He then allegedly stabbed Aubrey several times in the chest with a knife. Aubrey fled but collapsed and died a short distance away from blood loss.

She added that the body was found the next morning by a villager and reported to the village headman, who alerted Chilipa Police. A post-mortem at Chilipa Health Centre confirmed death was due to multiple stab wounds.

M'bwana has admitted to the offence and has been charged with murder under section 209 of the Penal Code. He is expected in court soon. He hails from Bonongwe Village, TA Chilipa, Mangochi.
