NEMA issues warning after Kenyans loot sodium cyanide from overturned truck
The National Environment Authority (NEMA) on Sunday issued a warning to the public regarding the dangers posed by toxic substance looted from an overturned lorry along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

According to NEMA, the truck was carrying Sodium Cyanide which is dangerous and harmful to human health and the environment.

The incident is said to have happened at the Kambembe area in Rironi causing spillage of the highly toxic substance.

NEMA said several containers have since been reported missing.

"The public is cautioned that the contents of the containers are extremely harmful and should immediately report to the nearest police station or Chiefs' office if they spot the containers," NEMA warned.

The authority cautioned the public against coming into contact with the contents of containers, which it described as being white substances in pellet form.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) also urged the residents to avoid the area and instead cooperate fully with the authorities.

MoH cautioned that the substance is extremely toxic and ingestion or inhalation of even small amounts can be fatal.

It said exposure to the toxin can cause immediate symptoms such as headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea, and vomiting.

Additionally, severe exposure can lead to loss of consciousness and convulsions within minutes.

Prolonged or repeated exposure to lower levels can result in long-term health issues including neurological damage, thyroid dysfunction, and cardiovascular problems.

Sodium cyanide can also pose a significant threat to aquatic life with any accidental release into waterways believed to cause extensive fish kills and long-term damage to aquatic ecosystems.

The ministry recommended the use of proper personal protective equipment when handling it to prevent direct exposure.

Obama: Why Biden is a patriot of the highest order
Joe Biden has been one of America’s most consequential presidents, as well as a dear friend and partner to me.

Today, we’ve also been reminded again that he’s a patriot of the highest order.

Sixteen years ago, when I began my search for a vice president, I knew about Joe’s remarkable career in public service.

But what I came to admire even more was his character-his deep empathy and hard-earned resilience; his fundamental decency and belief that everyone counts.

Since taking office, President Biden has displayed that character again and again.

He helped end the pandemic, created millions of jobs, lowered the cost of prescription drugs, passed the first major piece of gun safety legislation in 30 years, made the biggest investment to address climate change in history, and fought to ensure the rights of working people to organize for fair wages and benefits.

Internationally, he restored America’s standing in the world, revitalized NATO, and mobilized the world to stand up against Russian aggression in Ukraine.

More than that, President Biden pointed us away from the four years of chaos, falsehood, and division that had characterized Donald Trump’s administration.

Through his policies and his example, Joe has reminded us of who we are at our best — a country committed to old-fashioned values like trust and honesty, kindness and hard work; a country that believes in democracy, rule of law, and accountability; a country that insists that everyone, no matter who they are, has a voice and deserves a chance at a better life.

This outstanding track record gave President Biden every right to run for re-election and finish the job he started.

Joe understands better than anyone the stakes in this election-how everything he has fought for throughout his life, and everything that the Democratic Party stands for, will be at risk if we allow Donald Trump back in the White House and give Republicans control of Congress.

News updates

US President Joe Biden has announced that he will end his candidacy for re-election, saying "it is in the best interest of my party and the country".

It comes four months before Americans go to the polls, upending the race for the White House.

It follows weeks of intense pressure from fellow Democrats after a faltering debate performance against Republican Donald Trump at the end of June.

In a letter posted to his social media account, he said it had been the greatest honour of his life to serve as president.

"And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling the duties as President for the remainder of my term".

He said in his statement he would address the nation on the matter next week.

President Biden thanked his Vice President Kamala Harris, saying she was an "extraordinary partner".

Court bars women from naming children without father's consent
Justice Roselyn Aburili made the directive after revoking a birth certificate dated April 27, 2023, which was obtained by a Kisumu woman for her nine-year-old son after the alleged father disowned paternity and sought his name be removed from the certificate.

While cancelling the disputed birth certificate, the judge warned women against imposing paternal names on their children without the express written permission of their “fathers”.

In her landmark decision, Justice Aburili stated that children have the constitutional right to know who their biological father is.

“Mothers, please, your children have the right to know who their biological fathers are. Do not include the name of a person who is not the biological father of your child in the child’s birth certificate without that person’s express written consent.
“Do not lie as far as the paternity of your child is concerned. We live in a world where one can no longer lie as to the paternity of a child,” the judge stated.

Justice Aburili noted that Section 4 of the Children’s Act, 2022, is very clear that parents must put the best interests of the child first.

"In this sense, any decision made by either parent has to foster the rights and welfare of the child. It is also the right of every child to know his father. In the premises, mothers are advised that unless in extreme circumstances of abuse and neglect, to help their children know their fathers," she said.

According to Aburili, the psychological benefits of having a father present far outweigh the negative effects his absence will have on the child now and in the future.

The decision stemmed from a case lodged in court by a man known as F.O.A. who sought to have his name struck out from the birth certificate belonging to his former lover's nine-year-old son, saying he is not the biological father.

The aggrieved man petitioned the court on November 16 last year, saying he had a romantic rel
