Illovo Sugar Malawi plc loses at least 10,000 tones of sugar every year due to theft of sugarcane by communities surrounding their estates.

Speaking during a media engagement at Nchalo Estate in Chikwawa, the estate's general manager Ricky Pillay has highlighted that the development is negatively affecting their operations.

Regarding scenarios of insufficient sugar supply on the market, the company says it is worrisome because they sell about 900 tones of the product on daily basis.

Meanwhile, forex shortages, rising production cost, wet weather conditions and informal cross boarder trade have been described as some of the challenges currently affecting the company's growth.

In a quest to motivate and reward hardworking students, Maranatha Private Academy flew home at least 400 students courtesy of a partnership between the institution and Malawian Airlines.

The school has secured a deal that allows parents to pay only half the airfare while the academy covers the remaining 50 percent.

Maranatha managing director Ernest Kaonga says: "We always want to appreciate hardworking students while at the same time motivating others to also work hard. We want them to receive best treatment possible. We have done this before and we will continue to motivate our students and those from public schools."

Four young men have died after drowning in the Shire River on Wednesday last week at Kamwiri Village, Traditional Authority Lundu in Blantyre’s Chileka area.

Chileka Police Spokesperson, Jonathan Philipo says the victims—Austin Misheck (35), Lucius Dyson (27), Samalani Kinord (22), and James Kapesi (20)—were cutting bamboo along the riverbank when their canoe capsized.

A fifth member of the group, 22-year-old reporter Yotamu Mpoto, managed to swim to safety and alerted the police.

Following a search operation, the bodies were recovered on Sunday.

A postmortem conducted by Lundu Health Centre confirmed death due to suffocation secondary to drowning.

Police have since urged the public to observe safety precautions when working near water bodies.

The governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is dismissing the recent pre-election survey results, arguing that the people involved are politically biased and cannot conduct a fair assessment.

The survey, conducted earlier this month, placed opposition DPP’s presidential candidate in the lead with 43% support, while MCP’s Lazarus Chakwera trailed at 26%.

MCP’s second deputy spokesperson Ken Msonda said the results are not a true reflection of the national mood, claiming people responsible are ‘DPP sympathizers.’

Meanwhile, political analyst George Chaima cautioned against taking the survey at face value, stressing it may not fully represent voter sentiment.

In contrast, commentator Asabuni Phiri said the findings are not surprising, considering ongoing economic challenges and public dissatisfaction with governance.
