“Love is wise, hatred is foolish. In this world which is getting more and more closely interconnected, we have to learn to tolerate each other. We have to learn to put up with the fact that some people say things that we don't like. We can only live together in that way, and if we are to live together and not die together we must learn the kind of charity and kind of tolerance which is absolutely vital to the continuation of human life on this planet.“

— Bertrand Russell, BBC Face to Face Interview (5 March 1959)

”When you allow yourself to think inexactly your prejudices, your bias, your self interest comes in ways you don't notice. You do bad things without knowing that you are doing them: self deception is very easy. So that I do think clear thinking immensely important. I have myself a passion for clarity and exactness and sharp outlines. I do like clarity and exact thinking. I believe that very important to mankind.”

— Bertrand Russell, A Conversation with Bertrand Russell (1952) NBC Wisdom Series. Time stamp 17m. 32s.

Bertrand Russell's success can be partly explained that he wrote and spoke to be understood. His clarity of expression reflects the clarity of his thought. Unlike many philosophers, Russell is well-known for his lucid and elegant prose style. In his philosophical works, there is little abstract jargon nor do we find many flowery expressions. Russell valued getting to the point. The interview was broadcast on Russell's 80th birthday (18 May 1952).

Bertrand Russell — Hope

“And so, to the man tempted by despair, I say: Remind yourself that the world is what we make it, and that to the making of it each one of us can contribute something. This thought makes hope possible: and in this hope, though life will still be painful, it will be no longer purposeless.”

“To care for what is noble, for what is beautiful, for what is gentle; to allow moments of insight to give wisdom at more mundane times. To see in imagination the society that is to be created, where individuals grow freely, and where hate and greed and envy die because there is nothing to nourish them. These things I believe, and the world, for all its horrors, has left me unshaken.“

“The East reveres Buddha, the West reveres Christ. Both taught love as the secret of wisdom. The earthly life of Christ was contemporary with that of the Roman Emperor Tiberius, who spent his life in cruelty and disgusting debauchery and perversion. Tiberius had pomp and power; in his day millions trembled at his nod. But he is forgotten. Those who live nobly, even if in their day they live obscurely, need not fear that they will have lived in vain. Something radiates from their lives, some light that shows the way to their friends, their neighbours perhaps to long future ages. I find many people nowadays oppressed with a sense of impotence, with the feeling that in the vastness of modern societies there is nothing of importance that the individual can do. This is a mistake. The individual, if he is filled with love of mankind, with breadth of vision, with courage and with endurance, can do a great deal. Every one of us can enlarge our mind, release our imagination, and spread wide our affection and benevolence. And it is those who do this whom ultimately humankind reveres.“

“Freedom of speech and thought are the great promoters of a free society in which it is possible for the enquirer to let the truth lead him whither it will. Tolerance is a prerequisite in a society in which enquiry is to flourish. Men must act as well as think. But there is one thing that every man can do, and that is to allow others the freedom to suspend judgment on matters that he himself may not wish to question. This shows, incidentally, how the pursuit of disinterested enquiry is linked with freedom, which is counted as another good. To this extent, every one can contribute to the good here at stake. This does not mean that we shall all have the same opinions on everything, but it ensures that no avenue is closed by artificial strictures for man, as Socrates said, the unexamined life is, indeed, not worth living.“*

— Bertrand Russell, Wisdom of the West (1959), Epilogue, p. 313

━━
* “The unexamined life is not worth living“ is a famous dictum supposedly uttered by Socrates at his trial for impiety and corrupting youth, for which he was subsequently sentenced to death. Socrates believed that philosophy – the love of wisdom – was the most important pursuit above all else. For some, he exemplifies more than anyone else in history the pursuit of wisdom through questioning and logical argument, by examining and by thinking. His “examination“ of life in this way spilled out into the lives of others, such that they began their own “examination“ of life, but he knew they would all die one day, as saying that a life without philosophy – an “unexamined“ life – was not worth living.

Bertrand Russell's advice when facing others of a different opinion —

“It is important to learn not to be angry with opinions different from your own, but to set to work understanding how they come about. If, after you have understood them, they still seem false, you can then combat them much more effectually than if you had continued to be merely horrified. I am not suggesting that the philosopher should have no feelings; the man who has no feelings, if there be such a man, does nothing, and therefore achieves nothing.

No man can hope to become a good philosopher unless he has certain feelings which are not very common. He must have an intense desire to understand the world, as far as that is possible; and for the sake of understanding, he must be willing to overcome those narrownesses of outlook that make a correct perception impossible.

He must learn to think and feel, not as a member of this or that group, but as just a human being. If he could, he would divest himself of the limitations to which he is subject as a human being. If he could perceive the world as a Martian or an inhabitant of Sirius, if he could see it as it seems to a creature that lives for a day and also as it would seem to one that lived for a million years, he would be a better philosopher.”

— Bertrand Russell, The Art of Philosophizing and other Essays (1942), Essay I: The Art of Rational Conjecture, pp. 23-4

The Art of Rational Conjecture was originally published in 1942 while Russell was teaching philosophy at American universities and exercising a growing influence on America's student population.
