El pianista más importante de toda la historia de la Salsa sin lugar a dudas, QEPD maestro Eddie Palmieri 🙏

Eddie Palmieri, legendary pianist, composer, bandleader, and one of the most influential figures in Latin music history, passed away in his New Jersey residence on Aug 6, 2025, at the age of 88. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Iraida Palmieri, whom he lovingly called 'Mi Luz Mayor,' his constant companion and greatest source of strength.

Eddie Palmieri was born in Spanish Harlem to Puerto Rican parents, Carlos & Isabel Palmieri. Palmieri was the younger brother of the late Charlie Palmieri, a pioneering Latin pianist who greatly influenced Eddie’s musical path. Together, the Palmieri brothers helped define the sound of Latin music in New York City and beyond, each leaving a distinct legacy.

Eddie Palmieri revolutionized the sound of Latin jazz and salsa across a career that spanned more than seven decades. Known for his thunderous, percussive piano style and bold, genre-defying compositions, he was a fearless innovator who honored his Afro-Caribbean roots while pushing musical boundaries.

In 1961, he founded La Perfecta, a band that redefined salsa with its use of trombones in place of trumpets, introducing a richer, more aggressive brass sound that became Palmieri’s musical signature. His 1965 classic "Azúcar Pa’ Ti" was not only a dancefloor favorite but a musical milestone, recognized for its cultural significance in the United States when it was inducted into the Library of Congress in 2009. Palmieri also broke ground in blending Latin music with funk, soul, and socially conscious messaging in "Harlem River Drive," released in 1971, which was a politically charged, genre-crossing album that remains a touchstone of musical activism and innovation.

Palmieri was the recipient of ten Grammy Awards, the NEA Jazz Masters Award, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Latin Recording Academy, among countless other honors. But Eddie Palmieri’s legacy goes far beyond accolades. He was a mentor, a teacher, and a tireless advocate for Latin music and culture. He inspired generations of musicians and moved countless listeners with his artistry, conviction, and unmistakable sound.

Palmieri was immensely honored to have been featured in Spike Lee’s upcoming film Highest 2 Lowest. Palmieri wrote new music for the movie, which honors Puerto Rico’s Afro-Caribbean musical legacy.

Eddie Palmieri is survived by his five children and four grandchildren, who carry forward his legacy of creativity, resilience, and pride.

Eddie Palmieri changed the sound of Latin music with his passion and unbreakable spirit. As we reflect on his musical legacy, we know that he will continue to live eternally in our hearts.
