The jazz world mourns the loss of Richard Beirach, who passed away January 26, 2026, at age 78. The Brooklyn-born pianist was a pioneering figure in modern jazz, particularly renowned for his work with ECM Records and his revolutionary approach to chromatic harmony and improvisation.

Throughout his five-decade career, Beirach collaborated with jazz greats including Stan Getz, Chet Baker, and Lee Konitz, while his long-running duo with bassist George Mraz produced some of the most sophisticated jazz of the era. His ECM albums like "Hubris" and "Elm" showcased his ability to reimagine jazz standards through complex reharmonizations.

Beyond performing, Beirach was a dedicated educator who influenced countless pianists with his harmonic concepts and improvisational techniques.

Today we mark with heavy hearts the passing of Jack DeJohnette (born August 9, 1942 — October 26/27, 2025), aged 83.

Jack was a towering figure in modern jazz—versatile beyond the typical bounds of a drummer, he also played piano, composed, led bands, and gave voice to rhythmic imagination in ways few did.

From his roots in Chicago, studying piano from the age of four and later taking up drums, he emerged into the jazz world with both deep musicality and fearless innovation.

His work alongside Miles Davis during the fusion era—on pivotal albums like Bi***es Brew—placed him at the vanguard of jazz’s evolution.

But Jack didn’t stop there. He led his own ensembles, embraced free improvisation, world rhythms, piano-led projects, and pushed music into places it didn’t always expect to go.

For many of us—musicians, listeners, podcast-hosts, documentarians—his beat was more than rhythm. It was invitation: to listen deeper, to feel time differently, to let form loosen without losing heart.

Though Jack is gone, his legacy remains—alive in every cymbal crash that surprises, every groove that breathes, every silence that speaks as much as sound.

To his family, friends, collaborators, students and fans around the globe: we share your loss and we give thanks. Rest in power, Jack.

Heartbroken. D’Angelo changed the sound of a generation—his voice, his groove, his silence, all sacred. Few artists ever touched the soul like he did. Thank you for the magic, Michael D’Angelo Archer. Rest in power, genius. 💔🕊️

The rap community is mourning the loss of Atlanta Hip-Hop staple D.R.E.S. Tha Beatnik, who died on Monday (June 9). From Killer Mike and Pete Rock to Sol Messiah and AllHipHop‘s Chuck Creekmur, those who were fortunate enough to cross paths with the charismatic personality are feeling the impact of his passing.

Originally from Philadelphia, Lett was influential in Atlanta’s hip hop scene. A distinguished beatboxer, MC and event promoter, Lett created and hosted the World Famous Mic Club at Club Apache in the early to mid-2000s; the event sought to radically change hip hop freestyle battles by doing away with cash prizes and so-called “ringers.”

Lett was often hailed for his musicology. In a tribute, rapper Killer Mike called Lett “a curator of culture” and “a cornerstone of Atlanta, hip-hop and underground culture.” Questlove, drummer for The Roots, referred to the death as “devastating.”

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said, “Dres tha Beatnik was a unifier, a creative force, and a true champion of Atlanta’s hip-hop and arts community.”

Sly Stone, Maestro of a Multifaceted, Hitmaking Band, Dies at 82
Leading Sly and the Family Stone, he helped redefine the landscape of pop, funk and rock in the late 1960s and ’70s.

Sly Stone, the influential, eccentric and preternaturally rhythmic singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer whose run of hits in the late 1960s and early ’70s with his band the Family Stone could be dance anthems, political documents or both, died on Monday in Los Angeles. He was 82.
The cause was “a prolonged battle with C.O.P.D.,” or lung disease, “and other underlying health issues,” according to a statement from his representatives on Monday.
“Sly was a monumental figure, a groundbreaking innovator, and a true pioneer who redefined the landscape of pop, funk, and rock music,” the statement said.

Happy 50th Birthday To The One And Only Andre 3 Stacks!

Rapper, actor, and one-half of the legendary Hip-Hop duo Outkast, André “3000” Benjamin turns 50 today!

From his early days as part of Atlanta’s influential Dungeon Family collective to global superstardom with Outkast alongside Big Boi, André 3000 carved out a lane all his own with an imaginative blend of lyrical mastery, fearless fashion, and sonic innovation. With classic albums like ATLiens, Aquemini, and the chart-smashing Speakerbo###/The Love Below, André’s artistic contributions have helped shape Southern Hip-Hop and modern rap at large.

Known for his genre-defying approach and charismatic presence, André has also shined on-screen in films such as Idlewild, Four Brothers, and his unforgettable portrayal of Jimi Hendrix in Jimi: All Is by My Side. Though he’s remained elusive when it comes to new solo music, his recent instrumental flute album New Blue Sun and surprise guest verses continue to show his artistry knows no bounds.

A true innovator, style icon, and lyrical genius, André 3000 remains one of Hip-Hop’s most beloved and enigmatic figures.
